It's went by several names. The two chemicals are potassium promagonate and glycerin. Michael Lair sold this at one time, but I don't see it on his site now. You can contact him for more information. He's also a member here at The Café. His profile can be found at http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/bb_pr......er=14344

Also, I remember that Vito Lupo had an effect where he'd have a cigarette light without using a flame - I believe he called it the "Self-lighting Cigarette." I believe he used the same two chemicals as mentioned above.
By the way, the first chemical is correctly spelled "potassium permanganate." I also believe that it is a controlled substance, being a precursor to the manufacture of meth. Wikipedia states, "KMnO4 is often included in survival kits along with either glycerine or a glucose tablet for the purposes of making fire. The glucose tablet can be ground up, mixed with the potassium permanganate and caused to combust by applying friction." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Potassium_permanganate I saw Vito Lupo perform his effect in a lecture over a decade ago at the Magic Castle. It was a real winner! When the cigarette burst into flames by itself, every magician-onlooker was amazed! I can't imagine how well it would be received by non-magicians. It looked like "real" magic. Hope that helps. Arnon |

Potassium permanganate is a common chemical used in titration, show a couple of tricks to a college chem teacher and you can probably get a bit.

The addition of glucose is new to me.I ahve been experimenting with gly and KMnO4 but have not been sucessful..probably the chemicals I have are 2 yrs old.Is there an explosion or is it a simple fire?
Long ago 55 yrs to be precise..P.C.Sorcar Sr. used sodium in a cigg. tip and ignited with a little water(ice is what he used)! |
