Don't be alarmed by this post as I'm an avid cook and have shared, with a few Café members, an important interest in STEAMED RICE AND KOREAN CUISINE. This is only a post and matter of record for a few friends with an interest in Hanmi and similarly great rice.
There is no magic, as magicians know it, to be found here. I recently replaced the old Rice Box with the wonderful Fujitronic FC-10 model. Just had it delivered Thursday and oh was I happy to see UPS! I was so happy to see him that in my crazed fit I offered him a $10 tip. He refused and I crammed it into his pocket anyway bless his heart. I asked him how he felt about good quality rice. He didn't seem to give a crap one way or another but hey! I'm ok with that as I keep the rice and the dispenser! I can explain. If you appreciate and care for your rice (Hanmi rice in my case) then this is one of just a couple worthy models. I was undecided between these two after scratching several off my list: Fujitronic FC-10 22Lbs Rice Dispenser $39.88 + $12.00 shipping http://comfortforless.stores.yahoo.net/fufc22ridi3f.html Features: Capacity: 22lb Unique space-saver design, easy to store rice when little space is available Closed end designed to avoid the entry of insects Funnel dispensing assures the Ricewill run smoothly Sanitation: Keeps Rice Dry and Fresh Easy to use press down level for 1 cup of rice each time (150g) 18.2 cm Wide x 42 cm Length x 44.5 cm Height Manufacturer's 1-year limited warranty AND The Sunpentown SC10 22LB RICE DISPENSER $29.95 + $12.00 shipping Features: Holds up to 22lbs of rice, compact design fit in most cabinets. Accurately dispenses 1 cup of rice with each press. Removable bin easily transfers the rice to you cooker... http://www.digital4less.com Some of the bragging features are not so unique as they are found in all models I've seen. Some of the unecessary mentionalbles include: *Unique space-saver design, easy to store rice when little space is available (Who cares? They all are!) *Sanitation: Keeps Rice Dry and Fresh - (Which doesn't?) *Easy to use press down level for 1 cup of rice each time (150g) - (That's the least it could do right?) *18.2 cm Wide x 42 cm Length x 44.5 cm Height - (Standard) *Manufacturer's 1-year limited warranty - (What doesn't these days?) It didn't take me long to go with Fujitronic. More expensive dispensers offer accurate dispension of up to 3 cups of rice with each press and a removable bin. Well the cheapest models I've seen had removable bins and if you really need to dispense more than a cup at a time, you may as well just leave the rice in the bag or dump it all into say a five gallon container with airtight lid. Don't be fooled by those that offer steel construction and as a result claim their model to be 'insect proof'. The 'insect proof' feature is found in the lid or 'closed end' found in the Fujitronic model. They really put a lot of thought into that model. The Fujitronic FC-10 has a couple of features not found in these cheaper models that makes a difference! They include, oh and they are very very important and delightful features: 1. Funnel dispensing assures the Rice will run smoothly 2. Closed end designed to avoid the entry of insects When I found the Fujitronic model had observed and solved those two problems I just knew it was for me. Some models will accurately dispense a cup at a time but not all of it makes it out! Remember jiggling the bubble gum machine when you were a kid? Well you can imagine how you'll look making sure all the rice is out! So to see a manufacturer had designed a funnel shape dispenser was great! Can we slap our foreheads now and yell duh!? You know they've got you when you don't even scroll down to see the price. No, no, you just read those and similar features over and over again. The group who put this dispenser together knew what they hell they were talking about as they've been there and decided to make this a problem of the past. You'll see just how much I thought of this Fujitronic FC-10 model when I tell you that I recently had the horrible experience of listening to a relative's tales of woe. I made sure to maintain a posture of concern while we had our coffee and cigarette and she began. Something about her mother and all the years of agonizing gossip in the family. She went on about how Thanksgiving is "right around the corner" and the yearly battle over who will celeberate where. I found myself thinking about the nifty little thing. It's perfect weight and capable of holding up to 22lbs of finest Hanmi! I mean it wasn't like the cheap one I had before! This one meant business! The shape of it fit just right into the pantry right next to a few square containers we paid too much for at that container store. And the insect proof feature and oh...that sprial dispenser! No more shaking and rattling of the box! Some people out there are not only genius but God bless them! Next thing I know I hear "You know what I mean don't you Randy! I mean they have to be crazy to even think I'd agree with them!"..... I hadn't heard a word! I responded: "I just don't know how you do it Lisa".... Highly recommended and a real delight to own as it holds and protects your favorite rice. I just dropped a 10lb. bag of precious Hanmi rice (my favorite) into my new Fujitronic FC-10 and it is just a nifty nifty *** little thing. Makes me so happy to know that we have such a great little outfit to hold and care for good rice. This thing is fantastic! I'll be dispensing some tomorow and make sure to give it a nice pat on the top. It's nice to come across things like this that protect things that are important to one. Sure is nice. You can see Fujitronic FC-10 here: Traditional design, currently only in White (my preference anyway), and look at that removeable tray! Beauty! http://putfile.com/pic.php?pic=6/16701074129.jpg&s=f5 |

You must check out the photo of these items I write about. For those of you who've dined at a Korean Restaurant or been a guest in a Korean household, you'll recognize these at the bottom of this post.
As you may know, there are many styles of Asian rice bowls, side dishes, and tableware. My preference in foods and tableware remains Korean cuisine and yes, I eat the pungent Kimche at least twice a day. I prepare and eat everything from everyday and special-occasion dishes. The dinnerware these foods are eaten from can be important to some as it is to me. Somehow eating my favorite Korean dishes from anything but the traditional Korean porcelain or ceramicware doesn't work for me. I've collected several of the finer Korean style bowls and dishes but I was missing the basic white ceramic bowls and side dishes you find in the busy Korean restaurants. I ate from them all the time while stationed there. All the Asian shops I had visited offered a huge variety of dishes but none offered the basic white! Many of the shops offer customers the more flashy and colorful variety which I wasn't interested in. If you visit a true Korean restaurant, you'll find many of the soup bowls, rice, and side dishes served in these small all white porcelain/ceramic ware dishes. Some of the soups or stews are served in earthenware or stoneware which is expected. So having no luck in finding these basic dishes I contacted a Korean friend living in Los Angeles. She messaged me and told me I was being silly in my search as one of the best sources was http://www.kgrocer.com. She was right! I found the white ceramic rice bowls with lids, all white ceramic soup bowl, and side dishes! The other thing I had been searching for was the long flattened spoons and stainless steel chopsticks commonly found in Korean restaurants and homes. The spoon is often used for eating the rice (Koreans don't customarily use chopsticks to eat rice!) and of course, those wonderful stainless steel chopsticks I missed so much. The items are very inexpensive and well packaged for shipping. Found them all at http://www.kgrocer.com and even ordered some backups. Check them out if interested as you can trust them for the authentic pieces you found in Korea. Here's a photo of the items I ordered. A great reminder of the little Korean restaurants I frequented while there. Their e-mail communication and packaging is superb. Oh these make me very very happy happy! Hehehe... http://putfile.com/pic.php?pic=6/16923182144.gif&s=f5 |

I believe that rice may be my favourite food (you can do oh so much with it), but I'm not convinced on the value of an automatic rice dispenser. A measuring cup works for me.
I'll ask anyway: Do those dispensers do odd amounts (e.g., 1 1/3 cup of rice)?

Bowls/tableware: very ... uh ... white. I'm fonder of patterns/textures, myself.
BTW, check out http://www.quickspice.com/cgi-bin/SoftCa......+scstore Rice dispenser: you ain't seen the devilish little bugs I get here every summer. Only salvation is my array of 2-gallon hermetically-sealing plastic tubs from a restaurant supply store - easy enough to get into, and I can keep my rice - flour - sugar - masa - lentils lined up on the windowsill where I don't have to search for 'em. But you may be able to answer this question: does an electric automatic rice cooker (everybody oughta have one) work for sticky rice, as well? |

Balducci,
The measuring cup makes perfect sense and certainly works. Regarding odd measurements, I've never come across one of these dispensers that'll dispense that 1 1/3 cups at once. Those I've seen do 1 to 3 cups. For those of us who eat it at lest twice a day, a container that keeps it fresh and quickly and accurately dispenses the rice is just another little spoiling thrill. You can also see the rice through some of the dispensers which is nice. Again for those of us who eat rice at most meals, having to get the measuring cup, peel the lid of a container etc. just isn't as much fun as walking up to it, pushing the lever down, and removing a tray with the desired amount. You can then very smartly invert the collection tray into the rice steamer and away you gooooooooo! Ross, I agree the patterned bowls and side dishes are very nice! I have several myself. Actually I just purchased a Noritake white porcelain with platinum band. Very nice but these bowls are much like the Chinaware you've locked up in your China cabinet. Most of us don't use them daily. As for the sticky rice, I don't know much about Thai food but it's my understanding that you cannot make say, the authentic Issan flavored rice in a automatic steamer. The steamer I use is quite different to the imported sticky rice steamers I've seen! Those I've seen have a woven basket resting atop a metal pot steamer with a neck and wide at the mouth. I think some people also flavor their rice while rolling them into little balls. The Hanmi rice I eat is sticky but not served this way and there is no flavoring added at all. The dishes I've pictured here are to a Korean restaurant what large plain white dishes are to a greasy spoon. The novelty here is that if you have authentic Korean at home, you can serve it on those fantastic dishes one finds in those Korean restaurants. I was particularly excited to see the shallow white side dishes! I know, they look like ceramic petri dishes but when you add a touch of the side dish recipes it's like being in Korea again. The side dishes are called 'banchan' and several are served at every meal. I usually have four or five with the rice and a very small main course as the 'banchan' will fill ya up before you know it. So my average lunch or dinner includes five or six dishes each with small portions and very different flavors. Wo! can you taste it now? Here's a picture of side dishes or 'banchan' in the traditional Korean table setting. Banchan for all! AND WHO'S DOING DISHES? http://putfile.com/pic.php?pic=6/17100405177.jpg&s=f5 |
