Hi guys,
I'm contemplating on buying PME. Since that's the only book I can find the pdf version. besides, 13 steps is way more expensive, and dry to read (i saw a preview). thing is, is it safe to start with PME? Will I encounter jargons/stuff that I'd miss out for not having read 13 steps first? in short, does it assume no previous knowledge on mentalism field? moreover, is it really as practical as it suggested? meaning, that it doesn't take lots of set up/props to perform. because i`d like to have more of an impromptu effect with paper and pen at most? Thank you in advance for the answers.

It's a great book, and with so much content, there is sure to be something that suits your style.
It also gives an excellent overall feel for what mentalism is all about. Docc Hilford often takes things from that book, dresses them up, and sells them as great effects - e.g. Voodoo -> Mephisto's Journey...
Look at the Osterlind Easy to Master... series... a heck of a lot from PME You'd be surprised how much gold is in the old books...

Dr Spektor, sorry for the OT but Mephisto journey is taken more from Threadgill's ILLUSTRATED MENTALIST in which the presentation is the same, down to the eerie green light. I find that effect much better than Docc's in this specific case.
And, of course, that's the always returning question... My answer is YES, Annemann's and Corinda's are must have books!

I have both and I personally prefer 13 Steps over PME.
I really enjoyed corinda's discussions on theory, presentation, patter, etc. |

Thanks Paolo - I don't own Threadgill's work - but when I read Mephisto I flashed to the Voodoo effect which also has a green light (check it out) - go figure... alas and alack - more things to go searching for to add to my collection, it seems! (A lot of people like green lights)
Say, going OT - where can I buy a copy of Sigma ...!!?! As for Corinda vs PME - it shouldn't be a vs - PME is step 14

Very good book and if you don't have to buy the latest fads, it is worth its weight in gold. IMO

Dr Spektor, SIGMA is being updated (4 effects were added to the book up to now) but because I'm often away performing, the update process is slow. You have a PM!

Thanks for the answer guys.
But I'm still wondering, for a person who's fairly new to mentalism. Will I have some difficulties reading jargons/methods that might be covered in corinda. Because from what I've read, PME only goes through effects, but not methodology/foundation? Or tips on presentation. I'd love to buy corina if it can be found online. Else, I'd have to pay shipping close to the book price. Thanks again

Hi tyrael07
May I suggest that you keep an eye open for a copy of Corinda on ebay? There are often copies available there, and for a VERY reasonable price! As someone who purchased Corinda as one of my first books, I still have it, and wouldn't part with it. It's one of those books that you never really finish with - and can always dip back into along the way! Someone I knew once said there was enough material in Corinda alone to keep you busy for at least a couple of years - I don't know about that - but you will certainly want to KEEP it for a couple of years - amd many more I think! Corinda's 13 Steps is a sort of primer covering all the major aspects of mentalism as though the reader knew almost nothing. Annemann's Practical Mental Effects is a compilation of mental effects from his monthly newsletter, The Jinx. They are working routines from Annemann and top pros of the day. So one is different than the other. The routines in PME are fully explained and one can learn to do them from scratch, but 13 Steps might be a better place to start. I would also suggest The Tarbell Course in Magic as offering a fundamental grounding on many basic principles of mentalism. Richard |

You must have in your possession both books if you want a firmly grounded basis in mentalism. In my opinion, these books are all you need to become a mentalist - and if you are willing to be creative, you can go beyond what is written in these books. Thus, I believe that both Corinda and Annemann are equals.

As for Corinda vs PME - it shouldn't be a vs - PME is step 14 And see, I always thought 13 Steps was a nice bridge between PME and Waters' MMM. |

If you are the type that will start buiding something before
reading the instructions manual read PME first. If however you are the type that likes to read the instructions manual first the Corinda's 13 Steps is the way to go. Both are excellent books. |

Thanks again guys for the insightful replies.
It's not that I don't want to get corinda. Just that, at this time being, it's not possible for me to snatch a copy. Due to shipping hassles to my country and price. Maybe if I can find an e-book of corinda,i'd love to buy it. for now, I can only find PMM on lybrary.com. Thanks again

Several years ago, I went to a large discount electronics store run by Hassidic Jews. I was in the market for an inexpensive watch. I found myself dithering between two low-end digital watches, each costing in the vicinity of $14.95. After a while, the salesman, in a flawless deadpan, said, "Why don't you go home and think it over? A decision like this you don't want to make right away."
I offer you the same advice. Jeez! This is an inexpensive book, in whatever format, and an acknowledged classic that will help educate you about mentalism and leave you with several usable routines, plus ideas to chew over for years to come. If you're still dithering over whether to buy this...well, don't bother with mentalism.
