[/quote] I sense your genuine feelings regarding this issue and I respect your contributions to the field of magic in Hong Kong. to others who may not know, I have known mr.magicalbert for a long time and we once shared a common vision as to the progress of magic in HK. However, we drifted apart several years ago due to a small misunderstanding and somehow we never rekindled the friendship - much to my regret. Mrmagicalbert is a good man who really does care about magic in HK. I do agree with his observations on magic in HK but this isn't the place to discuss it. If he ever wants to contact me, he is welcomed to. Anyway, I think the controversy is whether or not Joker Lam has the right to market and sell his interpretation of Fukai's parasol production act. Of course, people like Mr. Magicalbert who learned it from the master would be outraged. However those who haven't had a chance to see fukai or Shimade or any of the masters at work would only be able to learn it through Joker lam's DVD (being the first one on the market to each this). It is really a matter of professional ethics and a difficult one to prove - unless Fukai or someone with inner knowledge as to the pedigree of this effect comes out with a statment or similar product. However, I doubt this would happen...I think Mr. Magicalbert's dream of limites access to magical secrets will be impossible given the new technology. Whether this is good for our art is, again, a very controversial and multi-faceted issue. |

All and all...joker did his part for the world.. more ppl love magic and take initiative to learn parasol magic..
but wat have fukai done? besides private lesson they don`t produce any form of publications to generate new magical parasol talents around the world. fukai is indeed a master at parasol.. wat makes me so sad is that, even masters who respect and own a performance video of fukai is not willing at all to share at the moment. wat i`m trying to say is that, can we magicians be more unite? y being so afraid to share performance video of past masters? the new generations are sure to benefit from it. if all the seniors in the magic community keeps these treasures to themselve till to the grave, the next generation will totally lost the true definition of magic. just my two cents worth.

I think we are already steping out of this topic.
I wish to post this last reply of afoi in this topic and then may be we can discuss in other Café section. I believe I understand WHY people afraid to share those preformances video nowaday. I can tell there were more to share before. The major reason is many of us notice that those video not really help the healthy developement of the Art now. Actually, many masters still willing to share their preformances' info to others, but not everyone. What we talk about healthy developement is let magic lovers watch more good preformances and give people ideas in create their own acts. BUT....nowaday... more people only trust media video and many people unwillng pay for watch live preformances. More people just copy the acts even music of characters, and not willing create or even think about their own act. Personally, I really mind about there are video cam shoot my act without my premission during my preformance. I believe it is very unfair to me if someone claim himslef a magic lover, shoot my act, play it in rew., forward., slow motion at home, then... tell everyone he can do my act in another week, BUT, most regret is he cannot really do my act because my act have my soul in it. We believe we only need one Jeff McBride, one Lance, even one Fukai, one Albert Tam., and more good magicians with their own creation and most important more individual magicians, not others shadow everywhere. I can tell our senior masters who I know are give a lot to our magic community in the past 30 years. There was far less channel for us to learn in my start preiod, and far less magicians than now. BUT.....I can tell there were more good magicians in that period than nowaday. WHY.....a question we may needed to THINK about by our new generaton. |

I always hope that the next generation will think this way and never forget the past masters, thanks albert for reminding me about this scenario about copy cats.

You need to take a trip to your local haberdashery (fabric store). Buy some elastic and a buckle, and strong black (for black suit) fabric (I use linen), get the old sewing machine out and have fun!
Making holders and bit's n bobs in manipulation and stage magic is very common, everyone has them slightly different so you have to make your own. My advice is to make more holders than you need and for all the different types you need in one long session, just to get it out of the way. Paul |

Oh and of course I really enjoyed the DVD and parasols. I'm a little upset that I can't have them all to myself though
I can understand the whole Fukai argument, and sympathise. However I'm very thankful to have this opportunity to see and learn parasol magic, as a young western magician, this is the first exposure I have had to it, and sadly the chances are that I shall never see Fukai. I hope I can put my own slant on parasol magic and make it my own. Give it a more British-Gentlemanly style. Paul (p.s. for an easy tune to play with check out Mint Royale "Singin' In The Rain" various mixes, great song, but doesn't fit my slower style) |

I would like to declare my sad and unsatisfactory toward joker lam new batch of parasols.
the first batch with such a good quality, finer steel spoke, and stronger spring. but the problem is that with the new batch seems like they use cheaper quality to earn more money from us I guess? I wish joker would have QUALITY CONTROL over his product. just like the way maintain their candle quality even throughout so many many years.. I was very very disappointed with the new batch of parasols..

PLZ DUN BUY THIS, IT SUCKS TERRIBLY.
THE RECENT BATCH PARASOL MANUFACTURED WAS TERRIBLE, RREALLY REALLY TERRIBLE... IT WAS NOTHING COMPARED TO THE FIRST BATCH WHICH IS OF EXCELLENT QUALITY, the distance from the linen edge and the sewn thread was soooooo near, and the edge is not melted to prevent FRAYING. one of my new batch frayed soo terribly that I cant even sew it back together again. upon closer inspection on all the new batch I found out that you cant constantly practice with it. its due the the fact that it was not hem or melt the linen or any fray prevention work being done to the material. so I hope that there wont be another guine pig after me, save ur money get original japanese parasols. I repeat, THE NEW BATCH OF JOKER LAM PARASOLS ARE VERY VERY VERY VERY BAD QUALITY..
