Does anyone here do unnecessary sleights throughout the day? When your finished playing with cards and set them down, do you have to go back and replace the palmed card? When you pick up change or any small item that you wish to take with your left hand, do you have to do it twice because the first time was a fake transfer? I do. The other day I was standing around the conference table at a meeting. I transfered a classic palmed half dollar to the edge of my little finger, which I extended (ala impromptu rising card) under the coffee cup I was holding. I had a folder in my other hand, and I realized I had no way to safely bring the coin back. I also was unable to drink my coffee without everyone seeing that my little finger was holding a half dollar under the cup. I knew I was a goofball but that situation took the cake. Am I alone on this?

I think the most common of these is the backpalming of a business card. How many people do you know, yourself included, who will do this without thinking of it?
I used to do this unconsciously. Now, I am a bit more careful. I don't know why I ever did it, though. I never have done a real card manipulation routine.

I am constantly (to a fault) executing Kurtz's card vanish with any thing that remotely resembles a card - electronic pass key, business card, credit card, any thing that fits. I love the move but I'm planning on a cold-turkey approach to stop it, except when performing. Tongue firmly planted in cheek.

Funny how none of the young hotshots seem to have this ailment (no offense old guys). Maybe they've never seen Blaine or Sankey do it.

LOL Hey now... I'm a young guy and I just saw this thread... give it some time... lol. I constantly catch myself palming coins when paying for any merchandise that requires it, and any time I'm playing cards, even UNO, I'm vanishing / reproducing the cards when I play them... it's a habit... but a good one. Now if only I could quit that smoking thing.... sigh...
Edit: I'm not that young... but not an old guy... what would you call 22? |

22? Young guy! Good for you. Just don't get into cigarette magic, then you'll really be stuck.
BTW from the way you write, I doubt you fit into the "hotshot" category.

Xiero, you're not alone! I'm twenty-three. Coins seem to get palmed and clipped (and moved from one position to the other as my "talking with my hands" requires) . . . Little kids' Sunday school papers somehow get folded and backpalmed when the kids give them to me to look at. I dunno . . . I tend to do unnecessary sleights even in the middle of an effect. Sometimes I'll keep an extra coin out when the trick absolutely does not require it, just to keep it out of sight of the specs.
Hmmm . . . am I obsessive? I like Pete's philosophy: "No sleights are un-necessary." (Oh, and if Blaine does something, that's a good enough excuse in my book not to do it . . . if there are two types of people in the world, I'm of the opposing faction.) Cheers! Keith

<---- Guilty. I classic palm and french drop things all day long. I've written letters at my computer with a quarter classic plamed. I am also guilty of executing the Kurtz card vanish. We give out ID cards to people who come into my work so I have PLENTY of opportunity.

This thread reminds me of the sequence Penn and Teller did (Teller with a cigarette by the lightpole) that revealed a series of secret sleights that accomplished absolutely nothing in relationship to what the audience was aware of.

I suffer from all kinds of withdraw symptoms: backpalm (anything), coin walks, transfers vanishes, sometimes I walk around fanning a deck, I even did some card spinning as I was walking.
