I'm a pretty open minded individual...I listen, I read and study. Ever learning. That's my attitude.
And I hate the thought of having to be under a doctors care IF I CAN AVOID IT! I'm too proud and independant. And I HATE the bills! Well, I am in my early fifties, and my dad passed away this year from heart disease, which tells me that I am going to have to be REALLY careful in my lifestyle. Well, make a long story short,I recently received an email from my brother, who is younger than me...and his cholesterol check was NOT good. But his doctor, (amazingly) rcommended a product to him which is all natural, and it has helped his cholesteral profile. So he turned me onto it. It is called Krill oil, and he was generous enough to purchase a bottle for me to try. If you can get past the odor, well, then it may just be what the old ticker needs. Anyway, what I was wanting to say is that I have found a lot of thing which can help the heart and your cholesterol and that whole situation in general, and don't carry the side effects of prescription drugs. Some of them are pretty simple. For instance, just eating a handful of raw almonds every day is very beneficial to the heart. Pomenegranite juice is excellent for the heart...clears out the arteries nicely. One that you may want to try if you are brave is CAYENNE pepper. Make a tea out of it. Sure makes the old sweat beads pop out on the forehead! I read about a doctor who actually STOPS heart attacks in progress by adminstering cayenne pepper capsules. I also saw a product on the web that caught my eye, called "heart drops" which I have yet to try. And let's not forget our old friend, Mr Garlic. I was wondering , though, if anybody here has knowledge of drug free ways to keep the heart healthy and keep the cholesterol in proper balance that they would be willing to share? I think this is a vitally important subject, and something that everyone need to be thinking about.

1. Eat real food, don't eat fake food. Real food grows somewhere. Fake food is made somewhere.
2. Drink water, pure water. 3. Exercise daily. Walking to the fridge for another beer is not exercise. |

Heart health! As one who has a family history of heart problems and has gone through the whole gauntlet of tests (including the catheterization), heart health is a subject I know well!
I concur with Jerrine's advice! Exercise is important. You don't need membership in a gym to get good cardio exercise. Get a bicycle or walk to those destinations that are short distances (this will also help on the wallet with gas prices!). Eating right doesn't mean just "rabbit" food. One can eat well and healthy at the same time. Best thing I did was eliminate almost all fast food from my diet. I'll still go out for McDonald's occasionally, but once a month is better than twice a week! Water...water is our friend! Make healthy choices with the food you eat. If you go out, opt for grilled or baked instead of fried! Bottled water is good, but try to get good old fashioned tap water in there, too! Bottled water doesn't contain fluoride, tap water does, and that's good for the teeth! When I drink a bottle of water, I refill it with tap water and drink that. I've almost lost my taste for sodas since I started drinking enough water! Now, the one thing with cholesterol is that it may not be just dietary that has caused cholesterol to rise. Heredity plays a part in it. My mother, grandmother, and a few other blood relatives have high cholesterol, so the doctor warned me that heredity plays a part in cholesterol levels. Eating right and exercising will help with this. Don't opt for a "quick fix" by thinking "ah, these all-natural miracle drugs will do the trick and I don't have to do anything else." Being fit and living healthy is the best defense! Margarette

Well for starters...Don't smoke and don't drink ! and go for a walk if there isn't anything worth watching on the "box" - don't just sit there like a zombie soaking up all the rubbish that is broadcast.

Definitely don't smoke!
But I read that a glass of red wine with dinner can impove heart health as well as potentionally reduce risks.

Actaully it was found that the same benefit from red wine can be obtained from a glass of grape juice and belive it or not...Hot chocolate.
Red meat of course is out, but there are good substitutes that have the flavor of red meat without all the fat and crud. Buffalo- Wonderful, but a little dry when grilled. Brush with a layer of Olive Oil before cooking and DO NOT OVERCOOK! Ostrich- Kind of like a richer version of Turkey. Absolutely delicious. Veggie Burgers- Don't trust them to be healthy just because they have no meat. Read the packages, some are as bad or worse than red meat. Turkeyburger- Horrid by itself, but tastes good in red sauces (And the tomatoes in the sauce are good antioxidants) and other dishes. Generally, eat at least 3 times as much veggies and fruits as you do meat. Here in the states, we tend to be a little backwards. 3/4 pound burger and two slices of lettuce for a salad. Things to aviod- Stress Nicotine Excessive portions Bears. Ok...The last one is just a good idea in general. Gwyd (Who is slowly learning to practice what he preaches) |

My wife and I have been students of vascular health for the past several years. We have more questions than answers!
But I will tell you this: your intake of monounsaturated fats is very important, especially the Omega 3 and 6. Magnesium is a crucial nutritional element as well. I suppose, before I give my input, that I will consult with my wife. She is an encyclopedia of information on this subject. |

I am overwhelmed with the response! Most of those that have been mentioned, I allready do. One thing I have been doing, that I think is very important was to abscise from my diet all margarine or products that contain partially hydrogenated oil. That is a major contributor to clogged arteries.
I switched to Smart Balance which has zero. Plus it gives you the all Important Omega threes. (or so they claim.) When I found out the company now makes peanut butter with the same formula, I have been including that also. Also, taking a spoon of extra virgin Olive Oil every day is very beneficial. That's why I learned to cook it myself and have it daily. I'll be adding some comments regarding the latest Korean cookbook I've purchased. It's titled "The Food of Korea - Authentic Recipes from the land of the morning calm". Regarding the garlic, Korea is the largest consumer of garlic even over the Italians! And it is also the largest consumer of Red Chili peppers and powder! Do you see many obese Asians with heart conditions, desperately fighting to loose weight, aging quickly - oh wait, that's many Americans not Asians. Yes I still love certain foods that are bad for me but have to keep it to a limit. Circumstance and time permitting, learn to cook the healthiest meals and cook them yourself! You can't trust even the best restaurants these days. |

A problem with the vegetable-source of Omega 3 (including Walnuts) - its form is more of a pre-cursor to the fatty acid that you need. Your body will still have to process and convert the vege- Omegas; and the human body is not particularly efficient at this. Best way to get immediately useable Omega 3 and 6 is FISH OIL, whether through the consumption of our underwater bretheren, or through suppliments. I use the suppliments at least once, sometimes twice per day. FIsh oil also reportedly helps combat chemically-based depression....
