Does anybody know if the ESP card trick from one of the mind control specials is published or marketed? I have heard of some that use marked cards but I have no specific references.
I can't remember which program it was on, or the exact effect, but roughly it involved the performer predicting the order that the spectator will place her cards on to the table by placing his down first. Any offers? Tim |

Tim are you referring to that the performer lays his cards in entirety down first or he/she lays down a card then the spectator and alternates thereafter. It makes a huge difference in methodology.

Hi Tim. The effect as seen on TV - don't try searching for it because it only exists within the flickering tube. The very similar version which Derren does when performing live is very good, and of course he puts it across superbly, but it's not something for which you will find an exact published or marketed source. There have been countless versions of 'five matching pairs' effects, ranging from David Britland's 'Zennerism' to Larry Becker's 'Impromptu ESPitome' via Paul Curry's 'Matchmaker' ... and many more besides. Each version has its own merits, and relies on its own brew of subtleties from the card worker's or mentalist's armoury.
As you know, we don't discuss methods here because we don't know who might be reading. However, although you won't find Derren's exact effect published or marketed anywhere, the combination of principles on which it's based are not in themselves new and neither are they exclusive to that particular routine. Mark my words, if you know where to look you can be sure you won't be one behind the rest when you try it out.

I don't like esp cards.
I don't like the effect Derren did. (and he does it very well) No lay person will remember it from a full show... No emotion, not visual but again ,very good for magicians ron wax ron wax |

There is a packet trick - "Symbologic" - which allows you to perform a version of this effect (and, I think, uses the method Ian is hinting at...?).

I don't like esp cards. I disagree. I think this is very poor for magicians, but very good for mentalists (and their audiences). My version of this effect (Bob's Your Uncle) is one of my most popular close-up effects. I do it all the time (never for magicians), and it frequently draws gasps. It can be done impromptu, with regular (ungaffed) cards (playing or ESP style, though I use the latter), and makes the participant the star (she, after all, is matching the cards that you put down). Hard to beat that. ... Doug

The closest marketed effect I have seen to the Derren Brown ESP trick is 'symbologic' which is a great trick and widely available. Its similar in presentation but worlds apart in explanation. Its the best marketed ESP trick I have ever seen or used and with the right style of presentation comes across just as strongly as Derren Brown's method.

Cheers Ian, you're too good at this!
I saw Derren perform his version live for some magicians, it does suit his style perfectly! Tim |

Try ESP matchup, can't remember who again, but I think its Mark Leveridge. I prefer this to symbologic.
Hope this helps, Simon |

I have the Mark Leveridge version, and it looks extremely similar to the Derren version.

If you really want to copy Derren Brown's performance of the effect (granted I believe he did not invent it) You can adapt Mark Leverage's version to work the same, without using the .......

Unfortunately, if you watch Derren perform this once you won't gain enough knowledge of his working, as things happen slightly differently depending on selections. I've seen this performed 3 times now on tv, and the different directions he goes is quite beuatiful.

yes, using this technique, you never know how you will end it. Either with a full hand turning over, mybe showing the last few cards etc etc...My version of this effect makes it so that you end 99% times with a full hand and turn them over one by one as he did on MC1/2?
