Hey guys new to this forum and about 3 months new to magic.
I want to get really good at card handling. Ie. Cutting the deck with one hand, doing the boomerang thing with a card, fanning them out...etc. What is a really good DVD or DVD's that can help me with this. And the cheapest online store. Thanks! |

Hello desiknow,

Don't fall victim to the beginner's curse. That is, running out and buying more than you can handle. I didn't have anyone to guide me when I first started and I ended up wasting a lot of money. We all want to know everything, but don't worry, take it slow and you'll see that you get there faster.
That said, there are some good threads on this topic already. One of them is a sticky at the top of this forum. A quick Café search will pull up several more.

Try just looking up card flourishes on youtube. Surprisingly, this is where I learned most of the flourishes that I do The people are the teachers, and they are surprisingly good ones.
When asked, "Would anybody play cards with you today?" Ricky Jay simply responded, "Sure."

I suggest starting out with an inexpesive DVD to wet your appetite with card workings...
https://shopmagicvault.3dcartstores.com/......_67.html If you really want to get into card moves after that, then purse it deeper. One thing to keep in mind - all the fancy cuts and flourishes in the world do not make magic. Flourished and manipulations are meant to dress up magic when and if needed. If you are new to magic and just starting out, forget the fancy card cuts ect... and focus on building a solid fundamental understanding of magic theory and methods. Look to the Tarbell series books and the Mark Wilsons books for this. If you are "just cards" then look at some of the classics by Dai Vernon. Do not fall into the pit many younger magicians do where they can cut a deck of cards one handed and flip them over and catch and spin and all that, but that cant do even a basic Cards Across effect, much less know who Dai Vernon or S.W. Erdnase is. Magicians call those people "card jugglers".

Personally, I am of the opinion that "card juggling", as mmreed calls it, is not necessarily a bad thing. It has its place in the entertainment realm, right up there with magic, ventriloquism, and other styles of juggling, including my personal favorite, contact juggling.
I saw a kid who was in one of the magic competitions at magifest a couple of years ago who had an act that was nothing but extreme "card juggling". No magic, per se. It was incredible to watch what he could do with a pack of cards, including the case!

I agree. Card juggling, or XCM, or advanced flourishes or whatever you want to call it can be a beautiful, mesmerizing thing to watch when done well.
But I'm a sucker for anything "done well," whether it's juggling, diving, playing an instrument, or stunt flying in a biplane. There are some YouTube videos of a guy playing whole recognizable songs (including the national anthem) by making fart sounds with his hands. Bottom line is he's really, really good, so it qualifies as legitimate entertainment in my book. You can tell he put in plenty of hours developing this ridiculous skill. In a magic act, a series of well-executed flourishes reassures people that your magic skills are genuine. Since spectators (hopefully) don't know how your tricks are done, they can't judge very well how difficult most of the effects are to execute. A nice, unapologetic display of dexterity can be appreciated by anyone - including people who don't care about magic - and sends the subliminal message that you've devoted equal effort to honing the rest of your act. Bridging the divide between XCM and regular magic, the Eddy Ray DVD set on Sleight of Hand with Cards is very well done and demonstrates some great techniques that you can actually employ in tricks, such as back palming and seemingly producing cards from thin air.

"Art of Card Manipulation" - Jeff McBride - is the way to go if you want to be on stage. He has three volumes.

Ooo, yeah. Forgot about that McBride set. Thanks for the reminder. Meant to purchase that six months ago, but then never pulled the trigger.
McBride did a great manipulation routine, BTW, at the World Magic Awards on TV tonight.
