Is it better to use tricks that flow and break off a couple times or do what you feel comfortable with doing next or what the size of the crowd is?

Personally, I find it best to have your tricks flow. Otherwise it could appear that you have forgotten your routine and that you are just picking them out of your head as you go along.
Also, if you have a small crowd it is sometimes best to make the first 3-5 tricks be totally different, as in cups and ball, coin tricks, card tricks, disappearing and reapeparing items, etc., so that you can see what tricks have the best reaction on that perticular crowd. If they love the cards, do 100 card tricks, but once you find out what they like, stick with it and try your best to make them flow together. Hope this helped you a bit |

I think the flow thing is a good idea but there must be peaks and valleys.
If it just seems non-stop , they will get bored. So, there must be a beginning and an ending and then perhaps a logical reason why the next trick is "the next trick." I think some people confuse "good flow" with a "well put together" set when what they're doing is stringing a bunch of effects together that almost appear as one 30 minute effect. That's a bad idea.

Go with the flow. While you may have practiced that routine a billion times, when you actually do it for real people it is completely different. Work with what you feel. If you think that they are not gonna be impressed with your monte routine that is coming up next in your set, then go on to the trick that you know will impress them!

Appearing to patch things together is actually very hard to achieve and needs a lot of practice so start with a short show that flows and build to a more spontaneous "go with the flow" act later.

Done right, you can segway from an opera to a train wreck!
It is all about timing and transition. If your question is, does one trick need to lead to the next, the answer is yes. But that doesn't mean you have to follow a rope trick with a public hanging. You just have to build the bridge between the effects. Cellini does rope, silks, ball manipulation, and Cups and Balls, and Rings. And he ties them together with patter and personality. That is what makes his performance a show, and not just a bunch of tricks done in sequence. It takes comfort with your effects, your environment, and yourself to do that. Once you have all of that together, you have a flowing performance. BroDavid

You oughtta do whatever it is that makes you comfortable. If they can sense that, they'll feel it too.

Or as Cellini says, "if you don't put anything in the hat, I'll follow you home and do the show all over again!"

Do you mind if I use Cellini's line in my show BroDavid I love it.
I reakon you should have a flowing show because I find that it helps to hold the crowd DVS regards, the masked magigian |

The line is Cellini's. Not mine. But I don't think he would mind if you personalized it and applied it, as long as you give credit where it belongs.
I heard him say it on his Lecture tape, and again in his live lecture, and the more I hear it, the more I love it. But it is one of those lines that has to fit you, in order to really work. BroDavid
