Once again...it isn't the prop but how you use the dang thing that matters.
I use three change bag routines with three different change bags in nearly every one of my one-hour shows. I poke my arm through it, get stuck in it, lose things in it, lose the bag altogether only to find it again on my back, get a finger stuck in the zipper, get hit in the head by the handle, pull a skunk puppet out of one, pull a finger-chomping lizard out of another, pull an 8-foot flag & pole out of a third, pull a cane fishing pole with fish out of another...kids and adults are so busy laughing they never stop to ask "What the heck is that thing, anyway?" If all you're doing is "See! I put it in here and it vanishes (or changes color)! Ta da!!" then no wonder you're having an issue with this...or any other "prop!" Be creative! Go beyond the norm!

Yes you are right it is not about the props, it is all about the magician. When I started this thread I was looking for some different ideas, because the change bag to me is such a valuable prop, and you my friend have supplied me with some very cool stuff to think about. HAVE FUN Al Angello

In the early '80's I had the "pleasure" of touring with the NATO/USO European Holiday Showcase. The director was a No-Punch-Pulled, head-whacking, what-were-you-thinking type. At that time everything in my act was performed pretty much right out of the box...almost word for word with the pre-packaged instructions.
At one of lay overs, she invited me to go with her to a nearby Café. She ordered her usual Sambucca and a cup of coffee and pastry for me. When the coffee arrived she handed me the pastry and said, "Okay. Make me laugh." She was dead serious. My deer-in-the-headlight stare convinced her to explain that Red Skelton had once entertained her for over an hour with nothing more than a donut and a cup of coffee. She sat and watched over me as I spent the next two hours creating magical and ridiculous things to do with that coffee, pastry and other things on the table. Some worked...some didn't. Some I still use today. She said she saw a lot of Red in me...a very high compliment...but that I had to break free of my cookie-cutter view of the world. I can trace my creative independence to that point in time...and I wish I could find her again to thank her and grovel a bit at her feet. Because of her, my mind bends and twists everything I sense around me to discover the undiscovered. Take the prop...any prop...and open your mind to what COULD be done with it...magical and otherwise. Then, on this basis, find ways to make those wildest thoughts come true. Ever wonder how many times someone told Dan Sylvester "Living cartoon? Impossible!" Thought I'd share that most wonderful of memories that this thread helped me recall. Thanks, Al.

Just a note to people asking about the Mis-made Santa silks.
There are actually two types of sets of the Santa ones, from two different manufacturers. The earlier one is by P&A silks, is called "Mis-made Santa Claus", which is the one I use in my show. You can get it from P&A Silks or from Denny & Lee. In this one a small black silk and a small white silk become the 36" black and white silk drawing of Santa (with the words "Merry Christmas" also printed on it), which eventually becomes a 36" full colour silk of Santa. (Yes, two 36" silks, the exact same drawing.) The other one is called "Santa's Suit", which is the one filmnar described, and is available from Hocus Pocus. All 3 silks are 18", plus a smaller red and white silk to start with. One silk shows an implied picture of Santa in his underwear hiding behind a cloth. The other is a proper drawing of Santa (colours right, etc.), and the third is a drawing of him in a red and white striped suit. Just thought I would clear up the confusion, in case you were only aware of one type. Speaking of Christmas themed silk sets, there is also the one Kyle mentioned that he did the artwork for, of a snowman (from P&A silks). I think it's called "Frankie the Snowman." Also, there is yet another Christmas themed mismade silk set, called "Christmas Lights", from Practical Magic. A drawing of a tree is involved in this one, as well as the use of a d'lite. I have one of those as well. So, lots of Christmas themed silk sets for use with a change bag! - Donald P.S. I use the change bag in many of my shows, and also use the switch can and a paper change bag in some other shows.

P&A silks are the best, but a 36" Santa won't fit in my change bag. Al Angello

I use a deluxe model with a round handle that came from Laflin Magic (now available from Lock Family Magic). It will fit a larger load.
I also use the same bag in various shows for my "Clarence the Caterpillar" routine, "Happy Birthday Mismade" routine, and my "Mismade Canadian Flag" routine. - Donald

I use a three chamber change bag in a routine I call "Animal Magnetism", but the way in which I use the bag defines it as only a utility item that is secondary to the effect so that all the focus of the illusion is on the scarves that I use and not the bag. I find that the change bag used in this fasihion is extremely effective.
Skip Way: Wow. If someone told me that saw a little of Red Skelton in me, it would be one of the best compliments I could receive! He as well as Danny Kaye are two of my favorite entertainers. Congratulations! Andrew |

The change bag is a very nice prop to use. But is pretty much only good for kid's shows. Some adults find it very amusing and others don't.

I have some silk scarf playing cards from P&A silks some 18", and some 9". This trick kills with adults, and kids. Especially when I forget to close the zipper, and cough up the second scarf from a TT out of my mouth.

All in all, I have eight or nine change bags in play in my various acts. I have one of Ickle Pickle's mini finger size. I use it to switch a card silk between that of a card face and a blank card. The slected card vanishes from my wallet, appears on the face of the silk then vanishes from the silk and reappears in the wallet that the spectator has been holding. Better yet, the itty bitty change bag is examinable when I'm through...not that I encourage this, but it blows away know-it-all kids and adults.
I have two palm size change bags that I use in a mental transmission act with cards...equally mindblowing for kids and adults...as randomly selected cards and silks pass from bag to bag between spectators completely (so it seems) outside of my control. I have a mesh changebag that I use with my Mark Wilson Bingo routine. Then I have the various changebag routines that I've already described. Every one of these routines receives raves, laughs, oooos and ahhhhhs from young and old alike. It isn't the PROP that does it...it's the ROUTINE and the HANDLING and the SHOWMANSHIP. This is the difference between a common magic trick with a common magic prop and WOW!!!
