May I ask all the people who use Ted Karmilovich's Zodiac trick to raise their right hand?
Fine. Now we can move over to other stuff. Yaniv Deautsch |

Max Maven's "Videomind" was mentioned before. On the third tape of that excellent series ("Stage Mentalism") you will find a great mindreading effect that uses no props, nothing needs to be written down, and it even works over the phone.
The effect: the spectator freely selects a country in Europe. With the help of a very clever principle, the performer reveals the nation of choice. "Contimental" has become one of my favourite effects. It is well worth the work you have to invest to perform it right. The tapes were produced by L&L publishing and are among the best videos in my collection.

ThorstenHappel: Hey, a fellow NYer.
I have to agree about the quality of material on Maven's Videomind series...but his stage persona just doesn't work for me. The heavy makeup, goth attire, baleful staring at the specs, etc. To me, it seems almost like a parody of mentalists from a bygone era. It's hard for me to imagine such a character doing something impromptu because, let's face it, impromptu effects are done by real people not theatrical characters. I think mentalism works best when it's presented in a more natural fashion, a la Richard Osterlind--his Mental Mysteries series (also put out by L&L; they have some really great stuff) is without question the best set of instructional DVDs I've ever purchased. I think the difference in audience reactions tells it all. Maven got some very good responses (though he also had to actually cue the applause at times), but Osterlind consistently received audible gasps and howls of astonishment and bonded with his audience in a way that is amazing to behold. And his nailwriter and spoonbending are some killer impromptu stuff. --Mike |

There have been some good ideas presented above.
My own personal favourites are psychological forces and suggestion work. Performed and worded correctly, the old chestnut of thinking of two shapes goes over very well. Some of Luke Jermay's suggestion work is outstanding as are some of Derren Drown's embedded command card forces. Banachek is also a main source of inspiration for impromptu stuff. I currently perform an extension of "The Brain Game" which results in the spectator taking a mental picture of himself outside a famous landmark in a particular country. This is the kind of stuff that I like and, although I still use billets and the like, I find that these impromptu mind games are more satisfying if you are able put the work in. |

Thanks to my friend Richard Osterlind's influence, I've begun carrying a nailwriter everywhere in my pocket. If someone asks for something "impromptu", I'm ready.
Someone mentioned Max's "Positive/Negative". There is a fantastic version of that in the Mystery School bool from Miracle Factory. Eugene Burger taught it to me, I've used it ever since. Rick
