I just finished to read Enrique Enriquez book THE ACT OF IMAGINATION... What to say about this book, first?
Well, the fact that Enrique is a friend could make you think I’m somewhat biased (and maybe I am) but I really found this booklet a goldmine of psychological advices and tips. Even if you already have read Orville Meyer’s Telepathy In Action and Ford Kross’ Suggestive Mentalism, or ESPECIALLY if you have read those books, I should say, because that means you are interested in this kind of act, you should grab a copy of this wonderful booklet by Enrique. Inside this booklet, Enrique gives you a well-planned, laid-out sequence of facts and tests you can learn and try the next time you feel you dare. The tests (or experiments, if you prefer) in the book are so well explained with abundance of details and every other nuance is given to you. You simply cannot fail if you only put your mind at learning the subtleties and the “outs” that Enrique patiently explains to you. I wrote “outs” but frankly this is a wrong label here... They are not “outs” because as you read through this book you are going to discover that you don’t need them. There is no place for an out in a situation that let you be RIGHT, always... no matter what the subjects say and do, or don’t. No, this is not some “perform after five minutes you read the instructions” trick… this is something more... Much more than that. It’s a multifaceted set of interactions between you and another living being, it’s a weaved complex of ideas, mental poise, acting... it’s a communication that is simultaneously sent on many levels, call it instinctual or primordial, non-verbal level... verbal level... but there is more. There is something that is not possible, I believe, to transmit, by the limited power of the written word, just reviewing it, as an analytical observer would do. I know that, in a way, some way, I contribute to hide the real magic of an act like this one with a review like the one I’m writing… Despite what the nay-sayers and the believers in the not-paranormal think (and I’m not saying here that Enrique hints you should present his act like a paranormal thing, quite the contrary instead) there is a sort of magic, a sort of connection that only comes from the right “vibrations” between you and your audience. Maybe it’s not magic, but certainly is something that is difficult to explain with mere words because it eludes your senses… Some kind of atmosphere, the right kind of atmosphere you need to create for getting the most from this kind of demonstration is something that it cannot be explained, it must be created and then felt, when you are immersed in it along with your whole audience... this is the feeling of rapture, of mystery, of fascination that this kind of act can create. But Enrique does not stop there… He also gives you some ways to start to pre-condition your audience for the main show… and one of those ways is based on some very well-known suggestibility tests one can find in the best books about stage hypnotism and alike, all skillfully sequenced and ready for you... There are some... uhm... I tentatively call them “effects” because is the most used word, in our craft, to define those kind of experiences witnessed by an audience… Some effects, I said, that are very good and really amalgamate smoothly well into the whole performance. My preferred one has to be the FACE-DOWN DESIGN REVELATIONS done by members of the committee on stage. I would easily give this book a 10 out of 10... Again, there are golden nuggets everywhere among the pages… even some nuggets so hidden that will take you a second reading of the whole book to see them... As I mentioned before, this is not a “read the instructions and in 5 minutes you can perform” kind of dealers trick (and, sorry for apparently going a little off-topic, no trick should be sold with this crazy ideas to be implanted in the minds of the wanna-be magicians anyway) because this is a full act, this is Enrique’s act... So, while you envision yourself reading this book, see in your mind’s eye how great it will be to be a performer able to dream, with vivid pictures, of being expert at presenting this full act... Imagine wisely!
Then you'll rise right before my eyes, on wings that fill the sky, like a phoenix rising!

It may be important to note that buying this effect second hand does not give one the right to perform it.

The concepts surrounding the triple bind are worth the price of admission
I would love to do a show using these ideas - however, I think this kind of material, although it is an entire show, has to be carefully scripted to suit the individual performer. There is no way I would perform it as it is. That isn't to take credit away from it - I just know what works for me and what I would change. That doesn't make it not worth the effort. I just hope that those mentalists who simply want to do a series of tricks will leave this stuff well alone so that only a few people can create entirely original shows based on this, and TIA that proceeds it. It's a strange world of having no real 'effect' to speak of - but it makes fabulous entertainment and that's what we are isn't it? Entertainers. You need to read this book a few times to understand how much you can do with it - if you can be bothered. Most people won't be. Personally I really liked it. Think improv theatre with you as host under the guise of telepathy under the guise of imagining things, and you've got a fun half hour with lots of audience participation, and a growing sense of 'what the heck is happening here'. Which is pretty original in this day and age. Bring on the ambiguous. I'm all for it. Nice to have a mentalism act which never says 'and for my next trick'. Bev |

Patrick and Mark, I'm confused. First, we are talking about a book, not an effect. So I just want to make sure we are talking about the same thing even though I'm not sure it would effect my question if we aren't.
Are you suggesting that if I buy a book "first hand" I have the right to perform the material within but if I buy a used copy that right no longer pertains? In case I'm totally misunderstanding you, I'll leave it that for now. Good Thoughts, Bill |

A long page, but this excerpt from the page summarizes it: "In practical terms, if a magician writes a pamphlet which describes how a trick works, the pamphlet will generally be subject to copyright, but the trick itself will not be. The magician would have the same exclusive rights in the written pamphlet as an author has in a book, but the magician would not be able to prevent people from doing what was described in the pamphlet." In line with that thinking, on a common sense level it is ridiculous to suggest that a magician that buys a used book on cards tricks, for example, could not perform those tricks in public because he did not buy the book new. Performance rights rules are specific to each area of publishing/artistic expression. The rules governing magic publishing and magic methods are summarized on the excerpt above and on the page quoted. |

And that is what my common sense told me Mota, hence my question to Patrick and Mark about Patrick's statement. I'm still curious to find out if we are misunderstanding what Patrick wrote.

It would seem a very odd notion to try to enforce given how much stuff gets bought and resold on this very site - it´s very common and understandable that many people buy the latest stuff and then automatically re-sell it - check out the for sale section here where the same names pop up time after time.ç
Regardles of the rights and wrongs, the fact is that it happens, it happens in every field and it will continue to happen long after most of us are long gone so getting petty over it seems pointless! |

Never mind performing items from second hand books.
The majority of the new books contain second hand effects ripped off from old books that may have been(and in certain cases definitely were) bought used in the first place! |
