I'll admit I watch the show when I get a chance and tonight Criss had people he would hand a flyer to and they would read it while walking away and go into hypnosis and fall to the sidewalk. Except for some pretty serious falls I will say I was impressed by it. He said he used subliminal messaging to achieve this. So fellow hypnotist, anyone care to guess how he did it?

How did he do it? My best guess: Luke Jermay.

Gotta love Luke and I have a few of his products but man when did he get all the Tats? I mean how does he hope to work in certain markets resembling a 3rd grade art project?

I'm sorry. But I don't buy any of that. Reading a flyer is going to make someone pass out instantly? That's just plain silly. In fact. Why doesn't he post it on his website and let's see how many of my friends and I pass out reading it? The whole hypnosis thing is the biggest joke, and hypnotists are nothing more than snake oil salesman. You can add mindreaders to the bunch.

Sorry seemed appropriate. ralpho needs to do some research. As for Criss and hypnosis guys let me just say this. First off yea it could work pretty easily. It is an induction and the expectation is there. BUT I believe it was stooging. My god he uses stooges to do EVERYTHING why not this? And by the way most people had the same reaction that ralpho did. Posted: Jul 13, 2006 3:24pm Here is why it was stooging. 100%? NOPE nobody will get that under almost any circumstance. NOT gonna happen. So yea it is possible, and yea it was stooging. Glad to see Criss ruin hypnosis and make it horribly boring to watch. Congrats to Criss, another art form butchered. Posted: Jul 13, 2006 4:53pm ONe last thing about the idiotic stunt. NO insurance company would let him hand out flyers that send people to the ground. NOBODY who has as much to lose as the MindFreak himself would take a chance on the saftey of the people. People just hitting the ground with nobody arround. Use your common sense guys. It would not happen. Forget "could not happen" point is it simply WOULD not. My favorite part was the next show where he borrows a blanket and vanishes in the park. Yea that wasn't set up. Or the tables at pool side. You know those flimsy patio tables, he stood on them and they didn't BUDGE an inch! Now that was magic. I guess I like it though. Doing the show this afternoon as it worked out one person did compare me to him. They found it cooler because I didn't use stooges. They knew this for it was their friends. Plus what was being done, the stunts and routines, were better than just putting people in trance, which I did in the first few minutes. So maybe it was a good thing after all.

It must be for real. Because of Criss' post hypnotic suggestion, I no longer can stomach watching his show. So, I missed the hypnosis...thank God!

Hynotize America,
As a working performer with full sleeve tattoo I can tell you that it's never hurt my ability to put on an excellent show for all ages. Here in reality we have this wonderful thing called shirts and they have sleeves...the flyer said "You are being filmed for televison, please act like you are instatntly falling asleep or hypnotized"...the waiter was a plant so was the girl in the reteraunt that fell out of her chair. |

Thanks for your post. I see in all of Lukes photos and promo he is wearing long shirts to cover this tats. I love Tats and plan on getting a few but I was just taken a back by it. I think in some cases it actually adds to a performer, but in his case it might take away, but that is where the clothes come in. Hope all is well. Tim |

Danny's got it right on the safety issue. I'm teaching the FIRST course devoted solely to safety for the stage hypnosis performer at the National Guild of Hypnotists convention in August and this is one of the BIG things I will be discussing - falls.
When someone falls, the implication is that an injury can and will occur. One of the MOST COMMON insurance frauds in liability insurance these days is the slip and fall scam and a stage hypnotist is particularly vulnerable to this type of scam, so being aware of it and controlling FOR it is absolutely necessary for the mitigation of liability. And while my own license in the insurance industry is limited to life insurance (I keep the license for personal reasons as I have a couple of rather tasty residual checks that come in on a regular basis for one thing!), we DID get some cross training in liability and health issues and this was one area that was recently covered in a couple of bulletins by several insurers, so I DO know what I'm talking about on this one. The probability that someone WOULD sue Chriss based on this stunt is VERY high simply because of his high profile in the public eye, if nothing else, not to mention his publicized money-making off-Broadway show and his TV series. That would indicate deep pockets to ANY would-be scam artist who wants to do a slip-and-fall on him! Secondly, as to the possibility of this actually working - check out Techniques of Speed Hypnotism, by Harry Arons. The printed Card induction was a favorite method of Franz Polgar, who used it on at least TWO of his world tours and Diana Barrar used it at a recent National Guild of Hypnotists convention show as well, and NOT as a post hypnotic trigger technique, so it IS a valid method, but the success rate requires some SERIOUS pre-talk and convincing of the volunteers ahead of its application. It is NOT something that can be done "cold," with anyone, as sems to have been the case on the show (I dmit, I did not see this episode - I was WORKING!). Lee Darrow, C.H.

Lee there was actually a minor pre talk. Edited I am sure. No matter WHAT 100% is just not really going to happen.

I want the lay public to think magic is easy...give it a try...in fact I teach a few basic mentalism effects in my set but when they discover how difficult "real mindreading" is they have that much more respect for you...this goes all the way back to Anneman and Corinda

Actually no it does not.
Your comparing apples and oranges. What Criss does is NOT what they did. He simply tries to pass off bad methodology as magic. NOT the same psychological gambit that was used in the references you make. HE is trying to fool people. The others were trying to lead them. HUGE difference.

If anyone has had the good fortune to witness the performance of Kreskin they will have seen the method of this topic realised, However Kreskin talks about there being no such thing as hypnosis but then upon the subjects reading of a note from Kreskin they go under.
I beleive that we have to credit this one to Kreskin Best, Sebastian Black

Criss's first season was canned after only a couple of episodes down under. Everyone down here saw right thru him.
I have hypnotised people before and if they were already hypnotised and told that they would fall asleep while reading the flyer yes that could work but we all know Criss and no he didn't do that. I met him in Vegas at WMS. I'm sorry but the sooner he is out the better. |

Kreskin's is a joy and a lesson in stagecraft and REAL showmanship. If a beginner needs a visual contrast between a hack and a master, there you have it. |
