Every three months or so, myself and a magi friend put on a magic show for our friends in a sort of dinner party atmosphere. We have decided to theme our next one to 'classics of magic'.
It is our reaction to our Blainiac and Angel Freak friends asking to see things they have seen on TV. We are hoping to "wow" them with some classics. I am handling coins and balls and my friend is the card magi(she is very good). We are gathering resources and equipment and we have ordered Johnny Thompson's 'Commercial Classics of Magic' DVDs Volumes 1 and 3. I have a couple questions if I may. Do any of the following require a ], or a C/S coin? I know there are different handlings of these effects so I am asking about Johnny Thompson's handling specifically. COINS THROUGH TABLE HAN PING CHIEN COIN TRICK WINGED SILVER COPPER & SILVER TRANSPOSITION ...also: Does "Phantom Cigarette" require a gimmick of any sort? (and what is the effect?) And what is a "Benson Bowl"? I am hoping I am not sounding too dumb with these questions! Eva

Eva,
The Thompson series is one of my all time favorites. You won't be disappointed. All of the effects are classics with the original handlings. You will need a C/S coin and from what I remember you won't need a Sh***. Han Ping Chien is a sleight, Benson Bowl is a great effect using only a dinner bowl and sponge balls. Phantom cigarette does not require a gimmick. It is basically a production of a lit cigarette. I would not hesitate in recommending the entire series. I own quite a number of Vids and DVD's and I constantly go back to watch this series. Not only are the classics shown and explained but they are very entertaining. You will see a very professional act. RandyM |

With all due respect,
Your quest to bring back the "good old fashioned effects" in magic is pointless. Blaine for one I believe already performs classics of magic mixed with new type of effects. Ambitious card is a classic as well as the levitiation I believe card to glass is another. Most of these effects are just repackaged. Just because we believe the method to be current does not mean it is not a classic effect. Also, surely your arguement for 'bringing back' the classics is contradicted by the fact that you need to learn some of these so called classic effects. I would suggest picking up some effects that you and your audience enjoy and perform. Gettting onto some so called moral high ground because some people think that d.blaine esq magic is dull and disrespectful to magic is ludicrous. D. Blaine (from what I understand) respects magic as an art and is always striving to bring in the new as well as respect the old. I would just look for effects that do not get shown on tv frequently and they should be very easy to find (usually in books as appose to DVD's). Do what D.Blaine and all good magigcians do make the effect your own, to the point were magicans and laymen believe the trick is actually your own. Okay you are just sick of people asking you to do that trick that the magician did on TV but I perosnally believe this is a good question (it may seem obvious to us but not to them), make an effect out of it. I would just say something like "what like this one?" then do the effect (it is not the one, but you have their attention). What I am trying to say is bend the question to your performance. It is like the old "can you saw my wife in half", you can turn that question into an effect, for example "No, but I bet I can make money disappear faster". There you have it an effect that comes about naturally. Just trying to persaude you to the other side of the argumenet (of course you are entitiled to you own opinion). Ste |

Sybilmagic... what is that post all about!!!!
If you read Eva's post you will clearly see that they are structuring a dinner party and have chosen the theme to be the Classics of Magic. So Eva, back to your post..... I noticed you are going to be doing coins and balls. On the Thompson Series he also teaches a classic called Balls and Net. This is wonderful effect that can be done with a sheer hankerchief or net and/or just a hankerchief with three balls. I can't recommend this series enough. I'm quite certain you will report back and agree these are great DVD's. RandyM |

Hi RandyM,
In a Nutshell Quote:
It is our reaction to our Blainiac and Angel Freak friends asking to see things they have seen on TV. We are hoping to "wow" them with some classics. << I am Responding to this with an alternative approach i.e. turn this question lay people ask into a postitive. How about just find alternatvie tricks that are about and do them rather than distiguishing Blaine and Angel as Modern and you battling away with classics. |

Sybilmagic, I think you got the wrong end of my stick! I am not on a moral high ground regarding David Blaine or Criss Angel...I respect both of them.
OK, maybe I should have said, the "lesser known" classics...like the Benson Bowl routine for example. (Lesser known to people whose only exposure to magic is Blaine or Angel) It is just for fun, for a party we are having.....nothing serious.

Eva,
Trust your instincts. You picked an excellent series. My only question is why you chose only volumes 1 and 3 of the 4 volume set. As RandyM has confirmed, this is an excellent set. Classic magic being performed by one of the classic masters. BTW, you'll love performing the Benson Bowl effect off of volume 1. And, note that on volume 4 Johnny performs a great cups and balls routine. Good luck on your party and your performance. Mike Mike

Sybilmagic, I think you got the wrong end of my stick! I agree, I did, the only issue I have is people giving famous magicians a hard time because of their popularity. Blaine bashing etc... and feel their popularity has made their life harder. However people like blaine (esp. in the UK) made it less odd to pull out a deck of cards and do tricks, IMHO. Ste |

I have nothing against Blaine...I even waved to him in his box in London.
