I just got back from performing at the Mayor's Annual Senior's Picnic. It's a luncheon celebration that the Mayor of Edmonton holds every year as part of his kick-off to our summer festival season. It's held at the Shaw Conference Centre, with formal stage, sound and lighting.
I was originally hired to be one of several 15 minute variety acts, but when I showed up today, the organizer was in a bit of a panic. She said one of the acts didn't show and she needed to fill in some additional time. She wanted to know if I could extend the time of my show (with pay, of course). I always pack more than I need just in case the unexpected should arise. So, I would up performing a 30 minute stage magic show for over 1500 people, including the Mayor and the Right Honorable Norman Kwong (this is the Queen's official representative in our Province) and his lovely wife. The magic was extremely well received and the organizers were really appreciative of my willingness to double the length of my agreed-upon performance time with little to no notice. In fact, they've agreed to make it an annual gig! The really great part was that, as I was reloading my equipment, I had parked next to Mr. Kwong's limousine. They were coming out at about the same time and we had a chance to relax and chat for a couple of minutes. What a true gentleman he is. I think I'll carry that conversation with me for the rest of my life. Anyways, just thought I'd share. Kent

Seniors love magic! I've gone to a few homes, a hospital, and around 9 dining for seniors - they all absolutely loved it!

It is easy to forget that seniors have probably seen and have more appreciation for live acts than any other age groups. Their lives are not manipulated by zoom lenses and post production like the generations that followed. They have seen the real thing live. And They enjoy it!
I love to perform for mature audiences. Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

I love it also. My color and flash act works great for eye candy for them. Word of warning, do not try too many pick card tircks. They can forget the card easily and then they are embaressed.
Heck I forget the card. Richard

Richard,
That is too true! When I was about one-third my current age I did a show for senior citizens and made the mistake of handing out a prediction in a sealed envelope. Before I really got into the trick, it had been opened and passed around the room. My friend did the equivalent of the Chinese Laundry ticket (Torn and Restored). The audience didn't get it. They did not remember Wayne tearing up the laundry ticket. They do love color, music, animals and motion. I'll take that audience anytime. (Besides, even with my white hair they call me "Sonny".) You are right 'Sonny' (Bob), they do love music, color and animals. In addition they are very appreciative of the performer. They appreciate the recognizion and love to participate. Don't be suprised if some of the folks are already waiting for you when you get there to set up at 1:00 P.M.
