I've just received my "Best Moments of the Amazing Kreskin" DVD set and has been glued to the TV since then. For some time now I have been hoping to be able to do some kind of suggestion-based effects like those which Kreskin and many other mentalists do. But my simple question is: Where do I start?
I'm not looking for effects per se because I'm sure there is a principle behind such work (and do correct me if I'm wrong with this assumption!), so I like to be able the principles behind what makes such suggestions work, how to go about making and planting such suggestions, and ways to ensure success etc. In other words, I'm hoping to start studying suggestion work. Presonally, I'm ambivalent about hypnosis and I feel that while hypnosis may be possible, the kind of things that Kreskin does (while everyone is awake) plays more powerfully. Hope you guys can help point me the way or give me advice. Thanks! |

Hi there,
I'm on a similair quest, but have found that most people (not just on the Café) are fairly tight lipped about where to learn this kind of gear. I've bitten the bullet and just ordered 'Sleight Of Mind' by Ian Harling and Martin Nyrup. There's a thread active on the Café at the moment, although it seems to have slowed down a little in the last few days: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......5&64 I also recently bought 'Building Blocks' by Luke Jermay, as several people on the Café had recommended it. I'd keep away from that if I were you (for now). Although I love his ideas, he doesn't actually explain the techniques he uses very well. While I'm sure the material is practical for someone who knows what they are doing, it's not very helpful to a beginner. Hope this helps. Unfortunately I can't be of more help, because I'm on the same quest. All the best, -- Topher |

Thanks a lot Topher! I don't really understand why people don't really want to spread this knowledge around too much. Other than the fact that you're creating competition for yourself, is there any other reason why people are reluctant to share information about this? I'm just puzzled that's all.
Oh and I'll appreciate if some of the people who *are* in the know could just PM me (and Topher... ) to help me out a little if you're not willing to have that information out in the public. Thanks! And cheers again Topher for the reply! |

They "could" be useful, but not necessarily a must-have to perform Telepathy In Action a la Kreskin... Indeed one of the books I would suggest to you is TELEPATHY IN ACTION by Orville Meyer - The second book is SUGGESTIVE MENTALISM by Ford Kross - The third book is THE ACT OF IMAGINATION by Enrique Enriquez. The first two books are hard to get (for various, different reasons) while the third book has just seen print few weeks ago.

Paolo - or would that be "Lord"<g> I agree with your suggestions. But if they are having trouble understanding Luke's material I doubt they will be abel to grasp Orville's. I haven't seen Enrique's material yet but would like to.
For those looking to learn this I thought Luke explained things well enough to get you started. The main thing will all of this is you have to go out and just learn how to present it. ~ Dan |

You are right, it's just I tought that it could be done without Luke's insights.
Don't get me wrong. I like most of what Luke has written but, maybe because of the fact I already had experience in those related fields, I feel sometimes he tends to overcomplicate things, maybe not on purpose, rather with the opposite intention... to make things easier.

Paolo I agree with you on all counts.
Just think TIA can be a bit much if someone is already being asked to have their hand held after thinking Luke was not giving enough info. My honest opinion is if you are looking for more than what Luke laid out you may not be ready. But I am sure that is an elitist attitude at best! I tried to PM you but couldn't. We corresponded some in another time and place and I wanted to touch base. ~ Dan |

If you like Kreskin, learn it straight from the horses' mouth. Check Amazon, he has a few books out, a couple I have checked out from the library in the past. He is a great writer and spells out his methods quite clearly. His earlier material gives more real work away while his recent work isn't as in depth.
Cheers. |

2 cents...
I think that people need to first understand what "suggestion" is. Kenton and others, call it a "subtle command". Once one understands that everything carries it's own "suggestion", learning how to use it doesn't become so difficult. I think adding small reinforcers to standard items, like "using your hands" to suggest/support shapes forces can be a great way to get familiar and confident using "suggestion" (the non-verbal variety). Also understanding that people "interpret away" from an overt statement is a great way to start understanding suggestion. "Implication" is suggestion. The minds capacity to "generalize" (or fill in the gaps) is also suggestion. The card I'm thinking of is red or ________ (what you heard in your mind is the suggestion) I'm not feeling ______. (what did you hear) This is one way suggestion works. The mind likes to create short____s. Sean |

No matter whatever you read, please take it with a grain of salt. No matter how much praise you hear. What you read is sometimes plain common sense.
And did I hear praises about Kross' book? :) Nah make it
To believe is Magic.

Man I would not even consider Kentons stuff.
I have heard it (Wonder Words) and do not find and have not found any value in it. Perhaps I am and was a bit beyond it. (Three yrears ago)And still it was about fifteen years behind what I was doing. In truth I loved it becouse of that! But it is a good thing for magicians and those who are not willing to learn for themselfs. I have had a 95% hit rate with a three choice prediction. Truth be told I am only doing it for real for my own fun. It started out as a thing from Higly. Jim

Thanks everyone for the help and advice.
Sean > Thanks for the ideas of how people interpret away from your sentences. I understand this form of suggestion that you are talking about, and I'm definitely keen on learning that. Just wished to know if there are resources for learning some of the more dramatic demonstrations like making a person unable to lift his arms or open his eyes etc. Jim > Just curious, any reason why you felt it was 15 years behind your own work? I haven't read or heard Wonder Words, but I do know of it and have heard good things about it, so just like to know what you think could be improved about it. Cheers again everyone! |

People talk about 'Suggestion' and so forth as if it's some complex skill unique to mentalism. Imagine having the same conversation but instead of mentalist effects you were talking about 'lying' to your wife.
