Sooo... there's a local "Tuesday Marketplace" - a sort of one-day craft fair and farmer's market thing done in the downtown area of a town close by, and I went out with what I considered to be my 'bare bones' street set.
After I busted out five or six shows, I had made... not much. But I *was* expecting as much. This is not a venue that's had much in the way of Pass The Hat performing. This was a test run, and I got good responses, if not much in the way of dinero. As one boothie said to me, "You just have to break them in, educate them as to what you do and how you make your living. They'll get the hang of it after you've been doing it there for a while." Keep in mind, most of the busking I've done has been in RenFaires, where you have some defined audience - performer dynamics right from the git-go. Your average "strolling the market" civilian doesn't have that mindset, so it has to be taught, yes? What're y'all's experiences in 'breaking in' a new area?

Keep money as part of your language thru-out your entire show. Always be referring to money, tips stc. It will give them the proper mind set.
Try it and see!
I am truly blessed to have a job where people are laughing all the time and everyone believes in magic....Come to think of it, I'm blessed to even have a job.

I've been told that you really do have to educate your audience. Think about it, they don't know you, they don't know what you do, why you do it, or what they are supposed to do. They were going to shop or get something to eat and walked over to a crowd or some noise and color. I firmly believe the guys who get the big hats are masters at educating their audiences more so that being amazing entertainers. That's just my opinions based on the wisdom of those who I listen to often.

I thought I'd do a little followup on this thread.
As a result of working (and in a way, creating) this new pitch, I have another gig at another market come up (the manager was impressed that I was getting and holding a crowd), and a series of non-busking bookings suddenly start occurring. Oh, and an interview with the local paper tomorrow, after one of those non-busking bookings. ... and a really nice hat out of 2 shows at the venue itself. ... so I guess I'm getting the hang of it. Thanks for the encouragement, gang.
