First I would like to take my hat off to anybody that is doing an outside show in the current heat wave across the United States. This morning I did a show and it's only 90. How do guys like boppies2 in Arizona heat of 115 plus do it?
My show was mainly for 3-6 year olds. One boy got up during the show and said "we can't do it outside today there are bees out here". Another boy walked up behind my table and said "hey that was a cool trick! How did you do it? As he was looking in the table. But why do we do it? Out of nowhere a little girl came up and just hugged my leg. This is why we do it! |

For the most part parties dry up in the summer. (NPI) Also parents have told me that they don't have b-day parties because all of the kids are out of town.
I have done a couple and always have plenty of sunscreen. I also insist on performing, and having the audience sit, in the shade. I also keep water near and don't hesitate to take a drink during a hot outdoor performance. |

It's been baking in England too, most unusually. I do shows outdoors whenever I can (wind and rain permitting). It's important to find a spot with shade for the kids and the performer, where the sun won't get in anyone's eyes. Over here the parties carry on right through the summer, and folks are more likely to hold them during the week.
I'll be including Peter Loughran's "Rainmaker" soon into my outdoor shows. That should cool the little dears a little! It's slightly tricky getting the initial set-up right, but a really cool device! |

Being able to put on a quality show in almost any environment is something in which I take a lot of personal pride. But it's the acknowledgement of the kids that make it all worthwhile. The other night, I was performing on the patio at a local restaurant. The heat was almost overwhelming. I had performed for this one family a little earlier and I had come back to perform one final trick for the young boy at the table. Everyone loved the magic and, just as I was about to leave, the father asked me to hang on a second. As he said this, his son reached out his hand with something in it. At first, I thought it was a tip (a lot of tips do flow throughout the course of an evening), but when I took a closer look, I realized that it was a picture the child had drawn in crayon. It was a picture of me performing magic for him and his parents. On the picture he wrote a caption that said - "Thank you for the magic - You are the Greatest!" One of the best tips I ever received. I just did an odd gig at a music festival. A friend of mine was the organizer. It was the kind of festival where everyone is in tie-dyes, half the vendors are selling home-blown glass art and the mere mention of Jerry is like speaking the name of a deity. It was a camp-at-the-venue gig, so a lot of families were there and they had a kids' tent.
I was booked to do a set before the music started on Saturday, and got there right after a lot of rain. The kids all met at the tent and walked together over to the stage where I performed. After the set, a little girl gave me 3 homemade bead/hemp bracelets that she and 2 others made for me. One had my stratosphere colors in beads. Kids are awesome. |

Abbascup,
No shows outside this time of year. I do all mine inside until the weather is a little more gentler. |
