I´m sitting here and wondering IF you can do this routine for children or what age can you do it for or not?
Then...I am wondering CAN I use this prop for anything else (without the dove) if I use it in my children's show from 3 years old...? (The link can take some time to download.) http://www.multimediaproduktion.se/maxello/AVSEQ0800 |

My guess is that it works "best" with a dove because of a dove's ability to rest easy in a tight space, but there is a chance that a "Rocky Raccoon" might work because it's a spring, there is a zig-zag Rocky if you go that route that is much funnier looking, cutting Rocky into 3 pieces, then restoring him. Available at Daytona Magic.

Hi Trixy:
I think this would be a terrible trick to do for children - I think anything that suggests cruelty to animals is bad, and is not appropriate for a children's show. It would be good if this could be done with a balloon, but I don't know if it's possible. I also like Smoke and Mirror's idea of Rocky Raccoon. I think it would be a big mistake to try this with a live animal in a children's show. Ron |

Even using Rocky with that whole Daytona device still implies cruelty, if you want to get down to brass tacks. Making animals vanish and appear safely is one thing, but keep in mind even "Rocky" can still look real to very young kids...I've used his cousin "Stinky" in my classroom workshops and pre-school and kindergartners always ask "is he real?" because of the movements I give him.
If I did zigzag with him, I think they'd be frightened...and I probably would'nt be invited back! Even older kids, I don't want to send any negative messages or give them ideas.... Chris |

Would it work with a balloon?

Thanks, I should have made it clear...the routine with Rocky that I have done, proves him not to be real. The only "trick" he can do is...sit, then his tail falls off (they love this), then he finds a card "blindfolded", it just fun and games with a puppet or stuffed animal. If a really small kid still confused him as real, I think he'll be too small to even understand what the zig-zag effect is.

Trixy, maybe you could do this with a balloon, but why use this when there are SO many tricks out there that are SO much better for a kid's audience. I would sell it and get something else.
Wonder is very necessary in life. When we're little kids, we're filled with wonder for the world - it's fascinating and miraculous. A lot of people lose that. They become cynical and jaded, especially in modern day society. Magic renews that wonder.

Chris makes a good point about Rocky - I didn't think about that. One thing to note, for what's it's worth, is the company who makes and sells this device is Tora Magic in Iraq. I like some of their things, but have noticed a number of impalement, slicing, and cremation pieces of apparatus.
I don't think I'd do this with any animal, real or make-believe. This particular device looks like it's probably uncomfortable for dove, but I don't know for sure. Ron |

I do not think a balloon or Rocky would fit into the table and base required for the illusion in the video. Phillip |

I like Smoke and mirrors thinking about the Raccoon...I have a wonderful idea for a routine with this prop and it does not include the dove. With Rocco or balloons and that idea I can do it for children down to 3 years old.
But I would like to get more ideas from you here regarding what I can use THIS prop for if I do NOT use the dove. Come on...think... |

It is more along the lines of bizarre magic or possibly comedy club magic. The purpose of this shrinking/penetration trick is to use a live animal or something solid. (That is where the "magic" comes in.) The way to see if this will look magical is to think of an example with a similar trick and compare: Let's use a sword basket. Question: How would it look to use a big stuffed animal in a small sword basket? Well, it loses its punch. Putting a big stuffed animal into a tiny space is nothing because it can be mashed without killing it. It is not alive. Sticking sharp swords through a stuffed animal is nothing special because it is not alive, plus it is easy to penetrate! If it was a solid rock (or balloon) in the basket, then maybe... (But then you have to consider "purpose".)

Do the zig zag to a Goshman foam hot-dog.
first: "Please give my trained pet, "Super Dog" (they see him come out) "oh, I RELISH this part of the show!" Have him come out strapped into one of those clown "invisible dog" leashes wearing a red cape with the letters "SD" (super dog) Have him defy death in the zig zag (a "stunt dog" will be required for this" Then vanish the hotdog into thin air via a huge change bag. make him reappear in your axtell meter at the end of the show when it explodes... "oh, there you are!" Just an idea...and a really corny one at that!!! however, the only danger is "little Billy" mangling his hot dog during dinner that night.... Chris |

I like the foam hot dog idea especially for a comedy effect, but, well...foam is foam. Brainstorming here....what about a kielbasa or summer sausage? If the compartment can conceal a dove clearly without harm, then a summer sausage should be just as easy. Combine it with an appearing foaming beer mug effect and you have a great potential comedy routine.
A balloon would probably work with the right comedy routine, but you lose the effect in the same way that you would with a foam hot dog...foam and balloons are believed to be compressible. That overrides the surprise of the compression. On the other hand, a water filled 360 or 260 just long enough to fit inside the elongated box may be more convicing...especially when it comes out in one piece. Maybe a banana with an appearing banana split blow-off? Using plaster you can design a fairly realistic looking faux ice cream banana split that could be produced from dove pan or crystal cylinder. What if you had an inflatable banana placed inside...once in, you pull the plug and deflate. After, you pull the faux banana split out of the dove compartment? Now that would be a surprise. What about a whole cucumber in and a sliced cucumber pulled out? You could create a face on the cucumber using various vegetables....white peas for eyes, a berry nose and a carrot sliver mouth...with cocktail pick arms and legs. Your magic assistant Cool Hand Cuke. (Groan!!) Put a wig and a skirt on her and you have Patty Pickle. Just a few wild ideas...maybe they'll kick start an idea or two! Good luck! Looks like fun! Skip

You are welcome, trixy! But here come the ideas and now we are cooking!!
Chris, cute & corny works great at kid's shows! Nice idea! Skip has some great advice and clearly knows how to brainstorm! It sounds like the effects Skip is thinking of could be called the veg-o-MAGIC! I think we are right on the edge of coming up with something! Trixy, it sounds like you can play this trick comedy and make it work... Now we just have to put our heads together and come up with something.
