Even though much was said in jest, I think it is a shame that many people hide their purchases from their spouse. Not being honest and open (aka lying to your spouse) can make some major emotional withdrawals in your relationship with them, if it's ever found out (or sometimes they have an inkling you are lying, which is bad, too).
For those interested in more, read "Love Busters" by Dr. Willard Harley. Also, think about it this way. If your spouse was racking up thousands of dollars worth of clothes purchases (or whatever) on their credit card, wouldn't you want to know about it? I think it's pretty important to be radically honest with each other about how money is being used, and have some mutual consent. - Donald

The previous message leads me to believe that a brother magician (Donald) is being forced to post against his will. LOL
Donald, don't worry an emergency response team from Tony's Trick & Magic Shop is on the way! Smartini |

Donald makes a lot of sense, and I'm in full agreement. If I do, on occassion, use house money, my wife and I are always honest with each other and full open to tell each other anything. No holding of secrets. Besides, if I told her I was buying "Off the Meter" she wouldn't even ask what it was, she would know it had to do with magic.

I always am open with my wife about the money I spend also. I would expect her to be open with me about money she spends - that is a partnership to me. Different people have different relationships, though - I realize that.

Let's get back to the topic: "When to Stop Buying and Adding Props"
Quite simply: Never, as long as I'm alive. Warren Stevenson, was still building props until he and the good lord decided a "Heavenly" performance. I'll still be buying until such time my body makes it impossible to do so.

To touch on the "withholding the truth" from your spouse. My wife IS my accountant, and she knows where every penny travels in our house! What has happened to my spending? I used to feel like "oh, man, now I can't get this or that new fangled cool thing" and now I've learned to be more frugal and save for the better items. Now, when I find something I think is "Jill worthy" I ask her about it, and she usually agrees. At the same time, she trusts me and I do make purchases that I don't go to her about, and that's ok with her as she knows that I"m more frugal and careful about how I spend our money. It's definetely a partnership, and you have to nurture it like a garden, weeding out the problems and encouraging the positive growth.
Would'nt Dr. Phil be proud? Now if only I could get Dr. Phil to sponsor that big levitation I want.... ;) |

Chris,
good post...it's funny how most spouses become really reasonable if you take the time to talk to them about things. I found that, at first, my spouse didn't really understand the costs involved in magic but, with time she became much better. She's also really good at asking (and often being correct) how this would add to my show or match my character. I'm assuming that your recent Lie Detector Helmet purchase was "Jill" worthy!? Yup, my wife thought I was crazy when I went to Costco and bought 10 cases of playing cards (with 9 decks per case). I explained to her that I go through about one deck of cards every hour when I am strolling. That meant that every deck of cards really represented $175.00 worth of revenue. Multiply that out by 90 decks of cards and suddenly my $150 investment didn't seem that outrageous.
She still thinks I'm crazy .. but for other reasons. As for when to stop buying or adding props, I just can't seem to do it. Every year, there are so many great effects that come on the market and a good number of those effects fit my character and can make my show stronger than what it is. I figure that buying new effects is tantamount to improving the product I am selling (similar to how automotive stylings get revamped every 5 years or so). But, I have noticed that I have become much more selective over time (Or is it simply that I own everything already and there isn't anything left to buy?). It becomes much easier to recognize which effects fit into the show and which ones don't. Kent

Great replies. I thought I was the only one feeling like this. It seems that buying magic is part of what keeps me happy and doing magic. Thanks guys!
