My search for this subject returned incomplete results, although I did find an interesting thread on Vanishing Bird Cages.
I am interested to know what you guys use to travel to and from shows, by car, for your doves? I have 5 of them, and I'd like to know what to use. I won't be flying anywhere with them - I'm a weekend warrior. I read that Bob Sanders uses a cat carrier, but there is no perch. Interested in knowing what you use. Thanks in advance. Chris |

Hey Chris,
I use a cat/small dog carrier for my bunnies and dove (separate cages). A small dowl through the side holes serve as a perch (for the dove). Max |

Hi Chris,
There is a section in Tony Clark's Book "Tony Clark Unmasks, Award Winning Dove Techniques". Hope this helps. Magically, Matthew Toner |

I also use a pet carrier, however I used a gluegun to attach a wooden dowl inside for the perch.
One thing recommended in the encyclopedia of dove magic (if you don't have it already, I can't recommend it enough), would be a small fabric animal carrier, one of the over-the-shoulder style bags. They have mesh sidings, and usually a lot smaller. Therefore the wind is blocked, and it's nice and comfortable for one dove. Obviously you can't put 5 birds in something this small though.

A use a dog carrier as well, with a wooden perch glued inside. A cool tip my teacher Larry Taylor passed on to me is to mix the seed with peanut butter and to pour the water onto cotton balls so that you can have food and water available to your doves without worrying about spillage when traveling. Make sure your doves will accept the peanut butter mixture and will drink the water from the cotton before you take them on the road, though.

Thanks everyone. Seems that the dog/cat carrier is a fairly common solution, so I have purchased a medium sized one that will fit all 5 of the little guys. I still have to work out the whole perch thing, as they all will want to ride on one. Sounds kind of tricky as 5 birds are a bit heavy for a hot glue gun fix, but we'll see!

Hi Magicleland,
I put the dowl rod through the holes on the side of the carrier. You don't have to mess with trying to glue it. Ice McDonald showed me how to just wrap masking or duck tape around the ends of the dowl so it doesn't slip back through the hole. Dakota Rose

Generally, my doves are trained to perch and to sit on a magic wand as a perch for their "safe place". That way the doves can be passed around the audience to be "seen but not touched" after a show. Unless someone reaches for the bird, they tend to stay on the wand. (I buy a lot of 3/8" dowels!) Just this weekend I surrendered a dowel to a fellow magician for use in the Saturday night stage show at SEAM. It's a stick of many uses! Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

I use a pet carrier as well and since it is only used for that purpose, I drove a screw through each side of the carrier into the dowel. The carriers come apart so it's easy to clean.

The screw works well if you do a lot of traveling. For me, the tape on the dowels eventually wore off, but is a great quickie holder. The cotton balls in the water work well. Bring a bag of them because you have to dump them daily. Michael Platt's peanut butter in the food is a super idea! I give my birds lots of baths in the hotel sink, too. I put newspaper on the bathroom floor and perch them on the shower rod to dry. I use a black satin foulard over the cage to bring them into various hotels and show venues without attention. I also have a large blue rip-stop nylon shopping bag (from Wal Mart)with a shoulder strap that holds the whole carrier for places where more disgression is needed. I can fit my snake box and my bird carrier in there, stroll right in, and never miss a beat! The less attention given to the bird's entry and exit, the better.
Wonder is very necessary in life. When we're little kids, we're filled with wonder for the world - it's fascinating and miraculous. A lot of people lose that. They become cynical and jaded, especially in modern day society. Magic renews that wonder.

One of my cages has perches with drilled dowels. Most are made where the top and bottoms can be separated for stacking in about half the space. It also makes it easy to power wash them. (Warning! Power washing does cause the color to change. They will be both very clean and very ugly.)

Today I bought eleven 4' long 3/8" dowels at Lowe's for $.78/each. What a deal!
They replace the green tomato/plant stakes that got put into my outdoor breeder cages during the summer. One 4' dowel will make perches for several travel cages. Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |
