Hi,
I was watching Coinvention a couple weeks back and for the first time I was introduced to this move called "web grip". This move was really beautifully done by Garrett Thomas in his Hangin Clean Routine, and I was intrigued by its "cleaness"! SO~ since then I started practice the move, BUT I can't seem to get how it's done from the brief explanation from the DVD. Anyone got any advice on this particular move? Where can I find a more extensive explanation on this? Just needed someone to point me in the right direction. Any tip would be useful! THANKS~! Brian |

Garrett Thomas goes through the move quite in detail on the Ring Thing Dvd.

The web grip is nothing more than Down's palm just put deeper into the thumb crotch. So do the Down's Palm but really press the coin into the thumb and you have the web grip. It allows you to move a bit more freely than regular Down's palm.

Somehow I just can't get the coin lock into place like Garrett does.
I just don't get it~ you got the thumb on one side and nothing on the other side of the coin (apart from the bones of the first and second figers which he said to avoid)? I feel lost correct me if I am wrong (hopefully) Thanks |

Any Questions and the Ring Thing video both have great explanations of the move, as does his three DVD set through L&L. As stated, it's basically the same as the Down's Palm, but you avoid the bones from the first finger.
Yes, that is my real name. Yes, I am a real person. No, you probably won't agree with me.

The Web Grip is one of those things that will not work for everyone. You have to have a certain shape of hands. I've practiced it numerous times, and the coin just doesn't stay put.
Garrett Thomas is a master of this concealment, and I'd encourage you to keep practicing. However, you won't be able to do everything in magic you want, just because you're so unique. Focus on the stuff you do well, and always strivve for improvement. Carrie |

I've played with the web grip a bit since the COINvention, and have discovered a thing or two that might help:
-The coin is held higher than my usual Downs Palm, which is in line with the space between the first and second fingers. Garrett seems to have the coin in line with the first finger. --A milled edge on the coin, or sticky hands, is/are essential. If the coin has a tendency to "squirt" out of position, you're not going to get it. The size of the coin is also important, relative to the length of your thumb. I found that initially, I could do this with a quarter, but not a dollar. As your hand starts to understand the motions, you can increase the size of the coin. ---You should be able to curl your thumbtip onto the edge of the coin. Once it's in position, use it to roll the coin back towards yourself as you turn the hand. That's all I got. I hope this helps someone.

Garrett Thomas plays the web grip well on Coinvention (IMHO). He hold the grip for just the right amount of time. He uses his patter, humor and even his body language as misdirection. All of this play an important roll in making a sleight like the web grip work. Similar to Kainoa's use of Motobe's grip.

I think, like most of the "newer" palms, the key to web grip is, as Wes says, the fluidity of movement as well as the technique. Additionally, if you think it's going to be a tight fight, you're mistaken. Like most palms, if you're holding the coin too tightly, you're doing it wrong--it's all about the light touch. Also, like most palms, everyone is going to be slightly different. Unlike Curtis, my position for Web is where my Downs palm is, so whether a single coin or a stack, it's possible to roll into Web from edge grip.
