From the "Stranger THings Have Been Known to Happen" file...
As I mentioned back in the "Breaking in a new area" thread, I spent an hour or two at a local "Tuesday Marketplace" event and... while I didn't get a lot of hat, I got some decent crowds and some applause which, from what I understand, is kind of unusual. More unusual, I got a call the Thursday after, from a gentleman who runs another farmer's market which happens to be in the same town. He books musicians for his market, for pay plus tips, and was impressed that managed to pull and keep a tip in "the toughest crowd in the state". So now I start a new gig on Sunday out at this market, with a set fee plus hat, in a defined 'stage' space for a crowd which has been trained to pay attention to and yes, god help us, react to the performances. I'm going out to that Tuesday market again tomorrow, this time travelling lighter (packing mah silks) and dressing classier. We'll see what happens.
