I stumbled on the following web site recently and thought I'd share it. The first time I went through it I wasn't impressed, but the second and third time it read my mind I'm embarrassed to admit that it had me kinda freaked out for a little while.

Yeah, I know now, but I'm somewhat new to mentalism and it took me a few tries to figure it out. It fooled all my relatives though.

If you liked that, try Reversal (aka Number Reversal) in Banachek's Psychological Subtleties book or his Psi series on DVD. It's spectacular, easy, spectacular, can be done "impromptu", can be done over the phone, and is spectacular.

I've been thinking of picking up that book as well as Corinda's 13 Steps and Banachek's Pre-Thoughts. Those 3 books should give me a good start right?

Be sure to check out all four forums in the "Mind Benders" section of the Café. Lots of similar type effects and websites. |

This is a pretty well known psychic test.

Loads of mental effects involve mathematical principles that people are unaware of. When you are next in Borders or similar, have a look in the maths or puzzles section. You can pick up a whole book of effects. Find a few interesting ones and see how the numbers used can be applied to real situations. Very often, a 'maths magic' is obvious when presented as a mathematical problem but unfathomable when 'converted' into every day objects.
Here's a math problem that hurt my brain for ages! Three men go to a hotel and book a room to play poker. The manager asks them to pay for the room in advance and charges them £30. They split the cost between them and each pay £10. After they go off to their room, the manager realises that he's overcharged them for the room. They should have only been charged £25. He gives the porter £5 and tells him to go the men's room and give it to them as a refund. On his way to the room, the porter tries to figure out how you split £5 three ways. Looking at the coins in his hand, he realises that he can put 2 in his pocket and give the remaining 3 to the men, £1 each. He gives the men a pound each and walks off to buy himself a pint in the hotel bar with the £2 he nicked. Wait a minute! If each man originally paid £10 for the room... And then got £1 back... That means they each paid £9 for the room - which is a total of £27 The porter stole £2 - which brings the total to £29 Where is the missing £1? |

Yeah, the difference between counting up and counting down is always good, as in this example. It really matters how you tell it. For example, the porter is a key in this story. If you just have the men standing there, it makes too much sense (you realize that you have to subtract the 2 instead of adding it).
As for your question, go with Anneman, Corrinda, and Mind, Myth, & Magic. You can pick up Psychological Subtleties too. I'd probably go in that order as well. Just my opinion. -Carlos

That hurt my brain man! I know I've heard this one before when I was young, but couldn't remember the answer and it took me almost 10 minutes to figure it out. Duhhh
