I perform this effect as part of a 'Swami' demonstration which begins with stopping one's pulse (Incidentally, I tell a tale about controlling the pulse with direct hypothalamic stimulation, accidentally discovered as a child when I put a cotton-wool bud too far up my nose! That is, I do a much 'fluffier' version of 'Blockhead' using a cotton bud, but it fits the tale!). I then do Sean Field's Saw (no blood), followed by the razor-blade illusion; half way through I scream, say I've lost concentration, and produce blood. I then regain control of, pop the cotton bud back in, and the bleeding stops ( as was previously mentioned, a genuine razor cut would go for hours, the mouth being such a well-vascularised area). Then it's on to knife through arm, with just a little blood, and then to finish I get my beautiful assistant to help with a demonstration of Mayne's 'Gutbuster'.
So there you go - an entire 15 minute routine of physical magic, with an adaptable plot to allow blood/no blood as you see fit. Just my tuppence worth... (and debut post in this forum). Steve M. PS At the risk of skewing the debate: A friend in the audience once overheard a lady of senior years responding rather non-plussed with the razor blades, saying "Well he's got THAT wrong - look he's cut himself."

Welcome to the Café Doc! (and thanks for the order!)
Sorry if I'm off base for this opinion but to me (personally) blood belongs on the inside...there's a lot like me that do not get all entertained by body fluids...however sebbyg is on the right track I'd say...just enough to make them look a little closer at what you are doing..."Is he bleeding?" Just enough for the trace...somewhere in the middle of the trick so that the blood is not the conclusion but the medium for having them pay close attention to the rest of the routine and it's climax. Paraphrasing myself in my book...better than making the blood run freely is to make their blood run cold. One of the key moves in many High Wire acts is the 'Slip, Fall and Catch'. Very well rehearsed but an audience grabber as they are sure it was disaster in every following step.

It appears to be a matter of taste, according to the magician but also the particular audience.
However, should you decide to go for the hardcore crowd, don't stop at blood; go to a butcher shop and get yourself a lamb's tongue, conceal it in a baggie in your pocket; and after bleeding profusely from the mouth, steal the tongue, bring your hands up to your mouth with the tongue "palmed", and then let it drop to the floor as though you'd managed to cut your tongue clean through. Force your real tongue to the bottom of your mouth as you attempt to talk and explain in mumble-leese. "Oopff!!". Now your trick can also include "cut and restored tongue" and you magically sew your tongue back on and string the razor blades together at the same time.. how you get rid of the lamb tongue is up to you. I'd say eat it, but that's disgusting. But people do eat that stuff. Okay, or maybe not.

Mystician,
I don't believe for a second that you cut your lip. I believe you bit your lip when you tried to devour something when they opened your cage at feeding time, and your keeper didn't have full control on your restraints. That's what I believe.
My mom says I'm reprehensible, I think I'm perfectly hensible.

Bit.. cut.. what's the difference ?
BTW, I bristle at the notion of having a "keeper".. I'll have you know I devoured him long ago.
