I know there are plenty of musicians here and I was hoping someone could suggest a vocal studio mic.
I want to upgrade from my BEHRINGER B2 Pro and have about £200 (GBP) to spend, although I do get good discount at music stores so retail price could be quite a bit higher. Any help, as always, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Mike.

Hey Mike!
Anything by Neumann is going to be the ABSOLUTE BEST studio mics you can get! They are a bit spendy, but even some of the lower-end ones are of top-notch quality! go to http://www.neumannusa.com for further info. Hope this helps! --JustinCredible--

I once dropped $500 on a mic. I have no regrets. There's a reason they cost so much.

Hey Josh,
It's better than dropping a $500 mic - lol I agree with you but at the moment (due to various magic purchases) I'm a bit strapped for cash and I have a project looming. I need a good mic that'll get the job done and then I can always sell it later to put towards a better one. I suppose I could always carry on with the Behringer but wanted (needed ?) more quality. Are you building your own studio, or does the studio where you record not have quality mics? (The latter would seem strange)

Afillius - many thanks.
Up to £300 (GBP) My thinking at the moment is the RODE NT2000 (£249) and shock mount (£40-50) http://www.soundslive.co.uk/product~name......2981.asp Best, Mike

Ok, YOU HAVE YOUR OWN STUDIO - BUT WHAT DO YOU RECORD? nARRATION, ROCK, JAZZ, WHAT INSTRUMENTS? (Sorry, had my caps lock on)
I am not nearly knowledgeable enough to tell you which mic for which use, but I'll tell you who might: the folks at (ignore the silly name) http://www.creativecow.com The forum is mostly video/film oriented, but there might be an answer for you there. |

Hi Ross,
I record mostly rock, pop, jazz, with some classical guitar thrown in for good measure. No narration (so far) - mainly electric instruments (gtr/keys) and drums. Thanks for the link, I'll check it out in a sec. Best, Mike

Thought I'd let you all know, I went with the Rode NT2000.
I liked the variable pattern feature and layed down a couple of vocal tracks yesterday with great success. Thanks again for your thoughts and help. Regards, Mike

Quick story for you mic people. A musician, also a magician, needed a special mic for a recording session but needed it in a very out of way place. I'm an expert in international trade so I was able to get the mic to him in less than 24 hours (an amazing feat considering where I am and where he is). Unfortunately I don't know anything about mics and left a lil' metal thingy here and just sent the mic. So he received a wonderful mic and no way to plug it in!
