This is a good additional stream of income, but I actually prefer GIVING them away to anyone who helps on stage. I think it really depends on the situation as to sell or not.

For example, selling DVDs at a birthday party, tacky. Take a page from Donald, Robert, The Dean and everyone else over at "The Dean's List" and use it as an add-on to the show. It's a GREAT idea. ("For an extra $5 per child, I will supply everyone with a free DVD"). The parent then picks up the cost and you are not "selling" to the kids.

Plus, you can not only have a promo video, but interactive games can be played on the DVD (using a high tech version of branching menus and multiple "stories" as they are called in DVD authoring land!).

Also, you can have an "enhanced DVD" that when played on a computer, can access your website. Think about them using the DVD to check up on your blog!

There are many possibilities.

Scott's right on (although I'm no longer affiliated as a professor with The Dean's List).

Using it as a back end tool is fabulous. I finally used them recently as back end sales at a festival. Made plenty of extra dough. And this DVD only has me performing on it.

We're working on creating our own DVD with tutorial on it for 6 or so easy tricks. Plus it will also have me performing all over the US and Caribbean.
(PS: It's coming this fall!!!)

That said, if you're tight on budget, there are several options for a generic prerecorded "how to" DVD you can buy the rights too. I don't have the links off hand but someone is sure to.

The idea is you spend like $250.00 and get a DVD which you may mass produce and call your own.

But yes, DVDs are a GREAT seller. They're the "in" thing. Brings you up to date with technology. And it gets you away from the old, tired, "coloring book" bit.
