I had an interesting experience around this the other day. It's a totally different situation, but it seemed worth sharing. While I don't know if I would ever use it again, it seemed to do the trick at the time.
I was doing some magic for a few kids at the church. I did a coin production that I often do as a quicky and produced an Eisenhower dollar in one boy's palm. He immediately pocketed the coin. I tried to get it back through the routine to continue with the vanish, but he told me he had a coin collection. It was now clear that the magic show was over and I was going to have to play grown-up. I told him that I had a coin collection too, and that he had the coin, and I didn't really have a way to stop him from keeping it. What he needed to decide was who the coin really belonged to. If it belonged to him, then he should keep it. If it belongs to me, then he was stealing it. I let him think about it for a moment and he returned the coin. The next step would have been to track down the parents. It was awkward and unfun. Once I had the coin back in my hand I explained that it was unstable and would have disappeared anyway, as I vanished the coin. This worked out for me because I kept my cool and tried not to be angry. I include it as more of a war story.

Well I am going to delight in telling my wife I look like a teenager. She keeps telling me how old I am looking these days. The hat hides my receeding hairline.
I hope the rest of you did not think I was a teenager the whole time. Here is another photo from last year with my wife. REMOTE UPDATE I contacted the client and explained that I lost the remote and asked if they had seen it. They looked around and it could not be found. I was careful not to accuse the child I had seen with it because I could not be sure if he had taken it or not. I just knew I saw him with it & it was missing. That proved to be the best strategy because 3 weeks later I found the remote at my own home. He must have put it back. Thanks for all your feedback on this one guys. In the past I have had a parent steal a wizard style hat used in a Harry Potter theme party. I got it back about 4 weeks later and had to get them to courier it to me because they lived in another city.

Andy,
Glad to hear this turned out O.K. This reminded me of a show I performed at a community event last year. After the show, I couldn't find the ring I use in my Full Circle routine and one of the kids told me that he saw a friend of his take it. (The friend was a girl who had participated in the illusion and at the time did seem very frustrated in trying to find figure out how the rope was passing through the ring.) He explained that she took the ring because she wanted to figure out out how it "opened up" to allow the rope to link with it!! The ring was easily replaceable but I've always wished I could see her as she attempted to find the gimmick in the gimmick-less ring! Good day to all. Andrew (P.S. Andy, I use to look younger myself until I got old.) |
