I was wondering if anyone has been affected by the recent changes in security at the various airports both here in the UK and over in the States?
I've indiectly been hit. It has been reported here that there are over 20,000 pieces of baggage missing from here in the UK that are associated with the disruptions. My props have just joined the statistics. Coming back from Madrid to London Heathrow about half the plane's passengers' bags didn't make it into the hold. That could happen anytime. But the back log of missing bags at Heathrow means that the baggage handling company can't say where my props are. Arriving at terminal 2 the baggage area was piled high with bags all over the place waiting to be processed. I'm told my props were last recorded as being in Madrid and were supposed to have come to Heathrow on a later flight the same day I flew in, (on Sunday) but the back log means that if they arrived at Heathrow they haven't been processed yet (and it's now Thursday!) but there's no way of knowing whether they actually left Madrid, whether they're at Heathrow somewhere, or if somewhere else and not got back into the system. Fortunately I have a duplicate set of everything for my act but it looks like I'm going to have to get a 3rd duplicate of the act just in case. As it is I've got a strange feeling I've seen the last of my props. Anyone else had any problems? Neal.

Hi Neal,
Sorry to hear about your experience with lost baggage. While it does happen, it can be VERY expensive for a magician. I have heard of magicians painting BIG "orange glow" dots all over their luggage with spray paint, or totally painting them some really BRIGHT color, in order to stand out from all the other luggage, bags, crates, etc...that get shipped on a plane. Nothing fancy, just big spots all over everything. By doing so, when they try to describe what's missing, and the airline starts looking for it, it really stands out from the rest and is easier to "spot." This idea is too late for you now, but maybe it can help you "the next time." Hopefully they will find your luggage, and there won't be a next time, but better safe than sorry. Mark. |

Almost nothing you can possibly do will save you from this fate if you fly enough. It is a numbers game and will catch up with you.

I agree, I fly over 300,000 miles per year and it is only a matter of time before it catches up with you. A game of numbers like you said.

Yep I know it...... I cover more miles than most cabin attendants an I've had, and am sure I'll continue to have, my fair share of no shows (pun intended)with my baggage/props.
The security disruptions though make this the first time it's not been able to be located with any certainty within the system. Thank goodness I duplicated my act. Neal

As I'm sure know you guys will have been kept awake with the worry of my missing props I'm happy to report that they've just made an unannounced appearance.
Of course I never once doubted the efficiency of the baggage handling system and I'm even more pleased that they've made it home just in time to run the gauntlet again tomorrow. Cheers, Neal

This is one of the reasons why I ship my props as cargo every time I travel. I've had a very bad experience when it was transported as check-in luggage (once upon a time when my show was smaller). Nowadays I perform bigger shows (illusions) and the cargo is a natural solution. Even when I get booked to perform some of my smaller acts, I still ship the props as cargo - nothing ever gets lost that way.
My act has many custom made things which can't be just bought in a magic shop(special costumes for our quick change act, several custom made illusions and smaller props) and it would be an immense complication for me to have everything in duplicate, so cargo is the only solution for me. Anyway, I used to carry some extra precioius, delicate and fragile small things for the show on me as a hand luggage, but I believe that now with all those safety measures and hand luggage restrictions that won't be possible any more. So I'm ordering a small ATA case with tiny little compartments for liquids, and small fragile things... |

Are you telling me shipping companies never lose anything?
Do the show long enough, shipping as cargo will eventually lose the show also.

Yeah, I know they do.... But somehow here in Europe the shipping companies are very good and it happens rarely though. Shhhhhh.... Don't bring me the bad luck by saying that they do lose luggage too.... No they don't, no they don't. LOL
