Dear Simon,
I wanted to add my small voice to the chorus of thanks for your wonderful contributions to magic. Your stack, and thoughts on memorised deck work, as well as many of your other insights, gave me huge joy, and really revitalised my approach to magic. There was a recent café thread on impromptu card magic; a survey of which illusions one would do if presented with someone else's deck of cards in a bar. It set my mind thinking of methods to generate a full or half stack from a shuffled deck. Obviously, there are some wonderful methods in Mnemonica, but I wondered if you had your own, or if you think that it's actually too much trouble, and would rather proceed with more expedient effects in such a situation! With great regards, Tim |

I've toyed with it over the years, but except for the original Nikola effect of Pseudo Memory to set up the stack impromptu, I haven't found anything worth exploring.
I generally prefer deck switches. See my DVD, Vol 3, for Shuffle Tracking, which is a strong fooling routine (easy to do) that rings in a cold deck. I realize that your question was about someone else's deck in a bar -- but candidly, that's not a situation I find myself in (except at a magic convention). I have plenty of non-mem deck tricks for such occasions. Simon
