Hey Simon, tell them about the magic word!

My friend Mergel Funsky likes to remind me that he is referred to “prominently” during one of the tricks on my DVDs.
On Volume 2, in the performance of Prior Commitment, I utter “mergelfunsky” as a magic word, to cause the two Jokers to magically appear face up. (I use Mergel’s name in his honor, and because it sounds funny – it got a laugh from the live studio audience.) And, later in the explanations, I mention that it’s important to say that magic word. The use of a magic word (or snapping your fingers) isn’t as corny as it might seem. It’s just one more way of focusing the audience on a particular “moment,” the particular instant when the magic apparently “happens.” If you focus your own attention at that moment, and utter a word or sound, the audience attends too. If you pause, letting the moment sink in, the audience will feel it even more. And they remember “moments.” (This kind of concept certainly isn’t original with me. Mike Skinner spoke of pausing at the moment of magic many years ago, and I was always impressed by it.) While you could use any magic word you want, don’t use something they’ve heard before. “Abracadabra” is trite and hackneyed, and marks you as unimaginative. I’m a big proponent of using your imagination constantly (in everything) just to keep things fresh, new or different. It doesn’t have to be a big deal, maybe just a little new touch or wrinkle that hasn’t been used before. Mergel Funsky is my occasional consultant on things imaginative, so his name seems to have a special magical touch. So, try saying “mergelfunsly” to emphasize that moment of magic.
