Did they lose their minds??? Or just the part that had good taste?
In case you didn't hear ... In this next episode they are dividing the tribes by race. There are four tribes, one white, one black, one Asian and one Hispanic. Please don't answer this post with ... "but it'll be good for their ratings." A public execution would be good for ratings as well but I don't want to see that either. Bad taste is bad taste. I hope this is their lowest rated episode ever. Best, Tim |

My thoughts as well! I am a fan of Survivor, but this is like a kick in the gut to a lot of people. It makes me sick that they would do this experiment for ratings.

Wow Tim! That is interesting.
I don't watch the show but know what it's about. You are right that it is in bad taste but I suggest to the viewers that this separation of tribes based on race would of been what the TV suits would of prefered to begin with. Like the frog in a pot of water, the viewers had the heat turned up very slowly. Now in boiling water, it's too late, in too deep, many can't walk away now. If you're disappointed in the execs even thinking of this, you'd be terrified at the number of people who WANT this. I promise you, with this episode of the "bruthas" vs. the "crackers" they'll even pick up a few more fans. LOL! |

Is this any different to seperating based on gender or age?
It is certainly more emotionally and politically charged but is it really that different? |

Very often in these reality shows the contestants branch off and form alliances based on a bias of age, gender, etc. Whether or not it's right or in good taste of the show to divide the tribes in such a way, I have to admit that we typically segregate ourselves in similar ways.
While you do see the ocassional group of friends that's ethnically diverse, it's much more common to see a group of friends who are all of the same background. If we divide ourselves this way in life, why not divide contestants on a show in a similar way? Also, just to clarify, they are doing this for the entrie upcoming SEASON, not just an episode. They've bumped the number of contestants up to 20 from the 16 that were in previous seasons. They claim that they've had complaints in the past that they've only had a couple of "token" minorities on the show, so I suppose one could now argue the point that they're giving equal opportunity to the races, since there will be 5 people in each tribe. I've never been a consistent watcher, and I may tune in for a few episodes. It's certainly an interesting idea that will be hotly debated for a good amount of time to come. Hopefully most will ultimately remember that at the end of the day, it's just a stupid TV show. Kevin

I'm against it because it can serve no good purpose. ( other than a ratings grab )
To make my point... I'll make this prediction. This thread and its topic will become heated and get pulled from the Café. Even though I am predicting this and giving people the chance to debate or comment with good taste to prevent it from being pulled .... someone will post some idiotic remarks and the thread will get pulled. Now imagine this hot topic being nationwide for the duration of this season. Like I said.... no good can come of it. Best, Tim |

I just saw the news 15 minutes ago and they announced that they are seriously thinking of pulling the plug on this season of Survivor. There have been numerous complaints already from various groups and politicians who don't think its a good idea either.

Ahh, Reality TV! If it's made for TV it's not reality.

They should wait and do something of this nature in an Olympic year.

This is ridiculous. Survivor was getting too much for me, I am more an amazing race fan.
Why would they "push" the limit here? For ratings? Poor taste if you ask me. How about Naked Surivivor or even Running Man where they begin to kill people on TV. If networks are going to seperate races into categories and have them compete as their race, how can they say this isn't a social statement? Does NBC agree with segregation? PS) ABC seems to have some great pilots this fall. I say we boycot CBS. |

I am quite shocked to see that this is happening. I'd actually expected this to become a sketch on the Chappelle Show - spoofing on how various races survive.

It is racist? Racist means a belief in the superiority of ones race over other races. Their separating the team by race isn't racist at all. Was separating by sex sexist? I didn't hear any whining then. When they separated by age was it 'age discrimination'? No gnashing of teeth was heard. I think the problem is that folks are so programmed now to be offended that they jump up like a good trained dog when ever race is involved. It is so bad that I went to pick up my nephew and his pal and the pal was missing, this was at a small fair. I asked him what his friend looked like so I could help find him and my nephew couldn't describe him, he just said "I'm not allowed to say". Finally I got out of him "his father looks like Jerry Rice". The kid was black but my nephew was taught 'never ever use race or color when describing someone'.
Here is my question to those of you so disturbed by this. Which team do you think has the upper edge because of this separation and why? I think that would be more telling than anything. Steve V |

I was neither disappointed in the game show concept, participants, execs and promoters of the movie game show as much as THE AUDIENCE! The audience in the movie is very much a reflection of what is stewing in the television viewing community today. There is an audience waiting NOW for such trash and yes, it would sell very well. Just count me out of it all. |

I dunno here folks....I think we better wait and see on this.
The concept feels a bit like a sucker trick...you think it is going to go bad but in the end it fools you... Mark Burnett has proven to be a real slick TV producer and creator and I think he might know what he is doing with this new SURVIVOR We do indeed sadly live in a world with much "Racial separation" and I would not be at all surprised if this show becomes a positive forum for discussion and might ultimately...by design....be inspirational. That is my gut feeling prediction anyway...although the idea sounds wrong...it will end up very right. |

Okay... I'll tell my only Survivor story.
Those of you who know my work (both of you) know I sometimes work and animate goofy stuff under the name of "Edward Bain". Back in 2000 after watching the first episode of Survior I quickly threw together a flash spoof called Survivor Mir to Mars. http://darkartsmedia.com/mirtomars.html And it almost came true on NBC...anyone remember the Survior in Space commercial that ran once? Mir had to go and plunge out of orbit |
