I do close up and want to volunteer. How do I start? How do I get the gig? Is there a manager in a nursing home/hospital?
A magical thanks, Joey |

I would contact Kevin Spencer and find out about The Healing of Magic. http://www.magictherapy.com/ or http://www.spencersmagic.com
this is a wonderful organization that will allow you to start.
Magic is an art. I am merely a tour guide.

I started last year by calling the volunteer department of a local hospital. I then had a "interview". Then I had to have a few medical tests done, take an orientation course that was designed for volunteers, and read a do's and don'ts list. Initially, the supervisor went room to room with me, but after a few times she let me go on my own.
Some places may have an age limit, especially if you were going in on your own. You should also check out some of the other threads on this. John

You could check with local retirement homes or churches. Retirement homes are always looking for "activities" to entertain the residents. Since many of the residents are "shut in" and can't get out, maybe due to a medical condition or just plain loneliness, they always appreciate people coming in to help out.
Churches usually hold programs for their youth groups, or congregation, such as spaghetti dinners, etc...and would appreciate that little something "extra" to make their activity a hit. Don't be surprised if some denominations view magic as "dark" or "voodoo type stuff." Being from the South, I see that occasionally. That's OK...just keep looking. You could also check with the local boys or girls clubs and see if they might have any volunteer opportunities that you can participate in. How about scouting groups? Your local schools PTA groups? Your local Parks and Recreation Department? If you think about it, there are places everywhere one can try. It just takes a willingness to reach out to help others. Thanks, Joey, for being willing to try. Oh, and by the way...welcome to the café! Good luck. Mark. |
