Hey everybody!
Guess who! hahaha I have been looking into building the "THE MYSTERY OF THE DANCING GIRLS" for Tarbell. I was wondering about how Practical this illusion is when it comes to transport and set up and so forth. Any tips on performing it or building also. And if you don't think its a good illusion that practical...maybe you can point me in the direction of a better one. Thanks guys, -Me

Is this your first build?
I built the spike cabinet from the Tarbell system and found it to be very portable as it is just three walls, a door, a ceiling and a base(ungimmicked) plus the spikes. |

There are actually two version in there. I think it is in book seven. One has the face of the person in the box visible at all times and is stronger than the other one.
For your first build, why not try the Light Cabinet found in Tarbell volume 4 (I think). I did this by added my own twist to it. One difference that I did was used fabric instead of paper for the sides. I also did not have a base (it ended up looking like a smaller version of Andrew Mayne's Spectre Cabinet...but I made it about 15 years ago). It packed down to fit into a golf bag size bag. |

I have thought about that also. But I didn't really want to mess with B Art. I wanted to build something I can use in more that a stage situation.

The light cabinet doesn't use BA.

Thanks for the help. I appreciate it. I will have to see if I have the plans for the light cabinet.

I've thought about building some of the illusions from Tarbell and other things also.
This is probably a very simple question, but where does one find spikes? Are they a large nail? I've read in other portions of the site where people recommended those used in aluminum gutters, but those don't seem sturdy enough for it. I am more referring to larger, thick spikes.

The spikes for the spike cabinet would be a lot bigger than nailing spikes.
I used wooden dowels ( I originally built it with a vampire/coffin theme) . You can use anything long (2 foot minimum). Andrew Mayne suggests umbrellas for a similar cabinet and he has also used it for voodoo box. You can use rods of light (novelty light rods found in electronic shops and at DJ lighting retailers). You can use hockey sticks if you wanted. The possibilities are endless. Just go with whatever theme/motive you are applying to the illusion. |

Thanks for the advice, those are great suggestions.
If I wanted metal spikes for an illusion, what would be a good thing to make them out of? I can't think of anything that would be satisfactory yet.

If you have to use metal spikes, check with a metal supplier or fabricator for aluminum or stainless steel rod of the appropriate diameter.

Yikes- I don't even remember the first Illusion I built anymore. The transportation won't be easy on this-but get Rand Woodbury's Illusionworks vol. 1. It should you how to make a REALLY nice deceptive base-possibilities are endless with that. You can add a bevel to his base on the underside for added room. The video is nice because it really shows you step by step what to do.
