Effect: Just The Backs Ma’am
Presented by: Reed McClintock Medium: Written instructions and DVD Arena: Close up cards Ability level: all Available: any shop, http://www.reedmcclintock.com, distributed by Murphy’s Magic Cost: $20 Reed Mclintock, the great close up performer out of Oregon, is continuing his expanding magic business with another packet trick. Like Gamblers Wildest Dream you receive a nicely produced set of instructions and a DVD to accompany the written instructions, a very good value. You also get the very gimmicked cards needed to perform this routine. This time we get a version based on the all backs theme, this time rather than the sleight heavier regular card versions you get an easy to perform version with special cards. The cards are printed on Bicycle stock and couldn’t be better, provided in a card wallet. Again this is a routine that is going to play out of the wallet rather than pulling from a deck of cards. The routine is simply that you show five cards, all the same value and suit, and one by one they turn face up and are laid aside. After the final card turns face up the tabled cards are shown to be all backs. The routine is simple and well w/in the grasp of any card guy from beginner and beyond. To be honest this is likely going to be performed by the hobbiest, perhaps as a carry around item for table hoppers, but most pro’s are not going to go with this routine as part of their standing act. This if fine because the packet market tends to be toward those at a hobbiest level. The structure of the routine is very good, well thought out, and magical….as everything I’ve seem from Reed is. This is a nice routine and I think anyone getting it will be happy with it and will perform it. I do think that some thought about the presentation will need to be taken by the performer. Reeds performance was all right but I think he did a version for the dvd that wasn’t as it would be if he was performing this at a club or where ever. I do have to take issue with the DVD. The production level is fine, a bit dark in back ground as the young man acting as spectator was in black and looked like a head floating around. The problem is that during the explanation Reed mis-calls (then corrects) some of the sleights used and loses his spot in the routine and has to restack. He really should have called it quits a couple times and started over or re-shot and let the editing fix the problem. You can learn from the DVD but I found the written instructions easier because of the errors then fixing them during the explanation. Reed does get an A for effort but if you are going to sell it do it right. That is about my only concern. Over all it is a nice card effect for those who like working packet tricks. Not as strong as Gamblers Wildest Dream. |
