It's undeniable. I cannot write an objective review of Richard Osterlind's Mind Mysteries Guidebook 3. Not only am I downright passionate about his work, I wrote the introduction. How could I be objective?
So I'll subjectively say that this guidebook will more than treble the usefulness of the DVD named Mind Mysteries Vol 3. You thought you learned so much from the DVDs? Hah! Turns out, there was so much going on underneath the surface that it's comparable to the depths of the ocean. For instance, Dai Vernon (everyone assumes a position of reverence) spoke on a video of how incredibly useful things just happen during performance: something may happen which gathers audience interest (David Copperfield trips down a step) or an audience member may come up with a priceless line. The Guidebook tells us of such a moment which happened during the taped performance, and the quip became part of the act. The Guidebook also shows how we can take advantage of such moments – and how to look for them and encourage their occurrence. Taking the risk of repeating myself from the introduction, with the DVD you learned HOW these effects worked. Here you can learn WHY they work. And there is so much in the way of performance, audience manipulation (it's not just misdirection), and literally reading your audience members – so much which can only be brought out through the introspective medium of writing – and reading. That stuff, perhaps the real down-to-earth nitty-gritty real secrets, is here. And now I'll risk a cliche: There is one chapter which is worth the price of the whole book – several times the price, really. It's called “How I Create.” If you, like I, regret that nobody really got inside the head of Dunninger, you'll appreciate this chapter like the fulfillment of a Christmas wish. There is no safe way to say it: I'm an unabashed Osterholic. It's gotten me some mean-spirited posts, some nasty e-mail, and some ridicule. But it's also improved my mentalism, my magic, and much of my outlook on life. And this book is a clear example of how that happened and is happening. *jeep! --Gran'pa Chet
