It works great for me, if it's 12" long and between 3/8" and 3/4" in diameter. My favorite wand, that I've had for 26 years, has laser foil on it and is made of fiberglass. |

How long should a wand for a flipstick routine be?

Lynetta's point about the stick reaching the inside of the arm at the elbow area is actually important. Consult Kevin James' notes for the 'why'.
"What's your drug?" she asked. "Hope" he said, "The most addicting one of all."

I use a S.S. 3/8" X 12 5/16" and it is completely perfect.
Anyone who uses anything else is just plain wrong. I Haven't gotten any media for this particular magical item (Although I am soon to, thanks Frank Starsini) regardless, Once I saw Jimmy Talksalot do his thing, I found a use for my wand (I cut 6" off of it though, I'm a Steel Fab guy).
Magic is doing improbable things with odd items that, under normal circumstances, would be unnessecary and quite often undesirable.

Thanks for the replies guys!
Would a lighter wand or a heavier wand be better for a flipstick routine? And yes I too am experiencing the 'whack' sound! Huron Low

On his DVD Flip uses highlighters, paintbrushes, lightbulbs, nearly everything he can get his hands on. For demonstrations he used the cardboard tube that comes with the coathangers dry cleaners return your clothes on. The last one is perfect for finding the size that you like best. Personally I use old drumsticks since I've got a bazillion of them cluttering up the joint.

Neverregret,
Eric Evans makes real good wands... could be wrong but I think they are Bois' Darc.. I think he has a set of notes strictly on wand manipulation that includes original work from jimmy talksalot.. I'd ask him about it if you are interested in wand manips.. they got serious chops. |

Perfectly serviceable and really sturdy. Eric chooses the wood so that it can take a beating. Some dowels will split if you bang them too hard, which is the reason that a drumstick will take a lot of abuse. For more exotic woods you might try someplace like http://www.rockler.com They have hardwood dowels made from a variety of woods. If you choose to go this route, you will probably want to finish it in something clear rather than paint so that you can see the wood grain. Many commercial wands are too long for me. I end up whacking myself when trying to use them. 12 inches seems about right to me.

I'm wondering...Flipstick? Is it the one where the wand is held horizontally between the hands, and then it's gone?

I think the question might be...what kind of wand suits your style.
I also use a "broke" drumstick and I am glad they come in sets because I bang the heck out of them. |

It is a good point. Weight, length and even thickness of the wands you use becomes a personal choice as to what you feel works best for you. There really is no one right answer. I experimented a lot to find the wands and such that I like working with best. Ones that have a good "fit" and "feel" for me.
