Lip control... always starts a debate on Worldvents. Here's my 2 cents:
Those who have good lip control swear by it. Those who don't, swear at it! I've noticed over the years that most (not all) vents who once had GREAT lip control, tend to lose it as they get older. Bergen (had perfect lip control in vaudeville according to Frank Marshall), Nelson, Wences, etc. Don't know if that's from practicing less or weakening muscles. Jeff used to have perfect lip control, but admits that he doesn't practice as much as he used to. Hey, he's about 47 now, I think, and I know for a fact that if you were a vent in high school you had a lot more time to practice than you after you have a family. Also 10 shows a day at Six Flags is still more practice/performing time than one or two shows a night at a club. The key is balance in performance and realizing that it's most important to entertain. Do the best you can in all areas of ventriloquism on any given night. But if you don't want to even try to have lip control, call yourself a puppeteer! It's not a disgrace... look at Henson, Flowers, etc. Indridcold: You are blessed. My son has perfect lip control and has no interest in doing vent. He's always had it since he was 4... never had to work at anything about it. Most of us aren't that lucky. And what you were saying about your changing expressions with your lips is very good. Ron Lucas actually used to practice changing expressions while the figure was talking. Gary |

As a guess, it may have something to do with having to lessen the strain on the vocal cords. After all, that's really your bread & butter.
Magic! The quicker picker-upper!
