I love my sponge ball video by Sankey called Earplugs.
Has anyone checked out his Beginning Magic video? What are other people's recommendations? |

If it's the "real magic" video, than IMO it's not worth getting. I got it because when I was just starting out, I went to the local magic store and asked what I should start with. To make a long story short, that video is for early beginners.. I had been into magic for only about six weeks just surfing the internet for whatever I could find, and I was already beyond it.. I only learned one or two useful things from it.. Don't get me wrong, I'm always interested in more magic, but I feel my money would have been better spent on something else.

Try the video tape by Patrick Page. "Secrets Seminars of Magic with Patrick Paige, Sponge Balls." If you enjoy sponges, you will love that video.
I saw "Ear Plugs" in a catalogue. Do you have to put the sponges in your ears? Welcome, Dynamike |

Hernan,
I do not have "Real Magic" yet, but against Peelz's advice, I ordered it this morning. (I considered your advice Peelz, and almost didn't order it) I decided to go ahead and get it because I work in a school system and I'm considering starting up a "magic" club next year. I figure that even if I don't get a lot out of it, the younger students in my "club" will. Next week when I receive the video I'll give you an update on it. Hope there isn't any money burning a hole in your pocket waiting for that one Until next week, then! Update! I just received and watched Real Magic yesterday. I definitely feel that the video is worth the money (and more) for a beginner. Jay shows you how to perform true magic with a variety of objects. The effects just happen to be simple to perform. I don't think a lot of the effects would be good for adding to a "show"...but would be great when out and about and someone demands that you "do a magic trick". If you really are a beginner like me (about 2 months experience), then the video is highly worth the money. |

I ordered it a couple of days ago and should be here in less than a week. Darren, can you tell me every effect on the tape because I am curios.
I also ordered modern day coin magic |

Whew, trying to list all of the effects on the video would take a while as there is no index. I would have to watch the whole video again just to do this! I'm too lazy.
But, I do remember...a rope trick, torn and restored dollar bill, a very cool rubber band trick, vanishing coins, a card trick, a knife/money transposition trick (utilizing the paddle move),etc...It is a nice wide variety of effects. Hope you enjoy this as much as I did. I found it very entertaining and fun (most of the effects were impromptu). Let me know what you think when you get it. |

I finally broke down and got the video. Based mainly on my love for the Earplugs video. I was disappointed because the Earplugs video might be an all time classic teaching video. I assumed all of his work would be of this calibur.
But, (maybe this is a good reflection on the Earplugs). The video still has 3 or 4 really good effects. The fourth would be properly teaching me how to do the french drop. I took the "drop" part of the french drop name too seriously. He easily explains his technique. The rubberband trick is a lifetime jaw dropper. Magic marker is good for me cause I always have a sharpie on me. People like the linking straws though I don't know why. I want to thank everyone for replying. I personally hope that there is a better beginners video. If anyone can suggest one I would apprieciate it. I would like one that teaches the basics and teaches what to get out of your slights. For instance if I can control a card to the top, what then? |
