The information I am posting here has been gained from my recent visit to Beijing. Hopefully with the follow up postings much more information will become available. First with few exceptions anyone wishing to attend FISM 2009 in Beijing will need to obtain a visa. This can be applied for from the Chinese embassy or consulate in your home country. The currant fee is $50.00 but could well be more by 2009. Getting to Beijing should be relatively easy as there are a number of airlines that offer flights from many of the major airports in the world. Most of the tourist hotels are of 4 or 5 star standard offering full western style accommodation including internet and telephone facilities. Getting around Beijing should present no problems as taxis are cheap to use but remember to get your destination and hotel return details written in Chinese as most taxi drivers do not speak English. The currency of China is the YUEN and can only be obtained from banks or licensed money exchanges after showing your passport. This can sometimes be a problem as banks close around 3-30pm each day and are not open on Saturday or Sunday. Money exchanges are not everywhere like in other major capital cities around the world. You should also inform your credit card company of your planed visit or you may well find that you are unable to pay for goods and services or use any ATM cash machines. The following information will be of interest to magic dealers thinking of attending the convention. Chinese customs regulations are very strict so finding out what can or cannot be legally imported into China is something that will need investigating. DVD’s are one of the items that are restricted. Taking money out of china is also another problem as there are strict controls governing this. For further information on visiting China please visit the following website.
