I'm performing "Jack and the Beanstalk" with puppets this November and would like a trick, possibly related to the story, to use as a warm up.

How about the newspaper effect written up in Gene Anderson's book, "Newspaper Magic" in which a newspaper is rolled up & torn & turned into a tree (or bean stalk) in your case?

I don't remember the story exactly but I think the moral was about greed and the goose laying the golden eggs wasn't it?
If so, you could start out in a hushed voice with the kids about a goose/duck who could lay a golden egg!(show a sphere of gold) Then the gold kept coming! (gold mutiplying balls) Vernet makes reflective silver & gold multiplying balls that are easy to do, but amazing to watch. Anyway I think this would help establish the story & it's meaning. Here is a product link: http://www.elmwoodmagic.com/?nd=full&key=1158 I was going to say the appearing pole too. Magic George is smart like me. |

I don't know how big your audience is, but if it isn't overly large, there is a story telling effect on the market called "Once Upon a Time". The magician presents what appears to be a small book. But on closer examination, it is discovered to be a very special packet of cards.
The magician explains that the cards can tell a magical story, even if they are shuffled, cut and all mixed up. The magician then goes on to cut and shuffle the deck before going into a very magical rendition of Jack and the Beanstalk. During the course of the story, the deck is repeatedly cut and shuffled, but the story continues in a very magical fashion. The really neat thing about this effect is that any of 3 different stories can be told and the reset is immediate. If you want to take a closer look at this effect, I bought mine from http://www.spookclub.com Kent

Dye your "stiff rope" green<!?>
You could start with a nice green silk ball (the pea) as you pull forth the silk (leaves) in the tale, until you get the silk to rope, complete witih green leaf at the top! Just a thought! k
