I’m looking for some advice on the appearance of soft coins, ideally I want the raised areas to be shiney for retention of vision and the recessed areas to be dark (for aesthetics). My question is, is there a way to add some colour to the recessed areas?
When I shined them I tried to direct the black muck that is produced into the recesses and only polish the raised areas, but it didn’t work as well as I’d hoped it would. And what if you’ve polished your soft coins too much and they are fully shiney? Is there a good way to get some dark colour into the recessed areas, or is it just a matter of time and handling? |

This is a trick which I learned from R.P.Wilson. Soak your coins(silvers) in bleach.(Not for very long 1-2 mins. tops) This will turn the coin black. Then if you clean the coins the black will coin off of the high ares and stay in the recesses. They look great!

Hey guys,
No problem. I love the way my Morgans looked after I prepared them in this fashion. They are still shiney, but they have a lot of contrast. Corey B. |

Great tip, but I'm not quite ready to put my Barbers into bleach. Looked good on my Kennedys though.

Why not Andy? IF you're worried about lessening the value of the coins you shouldn't even be handling them. If they're "soft" coins they have no collectible value anyway. When I buy soft morgans I get them from collector shops that melt them for the weight value.

Well they weren't cheap, about $8.50 each and I like the way they look just now, although they could be a bit darker in the recesses.
Well I decided to go ahead and bleach my Barbers, and they look excellent now. Now some more questions: Bleach only works with silver coins, so is there a way to get some extra dark contrast on a copper coin or on a Johnson half dollar shell? Is the Johnson Walking Liberty shell made of silver, i.e. if I buy one will I be able to colour it to match my coins? |

The Liberty Shell should be made out of silve seeing as it was made from actual Liberty coins to begin with.
As far as copper coins go, I have no idea what you would do. I do not think that they would look as nice with dark contrast line because they are so dark as it is. Just a thought. Take it easy. Corey B. |

actually folks, if you examine the residue at the bottom of a bottle of tarn-ex, you will find your BLACK tarnish maker. I have some walking liberty halves that are BLACK made this way. A bit of polish rubbed into a cloth... put the cloth on a worktable, then rub the coin on the cloth should get you the extreme contrast effects you desire.

Thanks for the bleach tip, Corey. Before I read your post, I thought bleach would be a good way to clean my coins off!

Curtis, are you cloning coins and trying to get their skin lighter? Any luck with the moths?

Well, now that the cat's out of the bag, I might as well let everybody know.... watch for my new close-up show in Las Vegas, featuring the rare and beautiful Siberian White Moths!
Contrary to rumors borne of the recent litigation, these moths have clearly not been proven to be "bleached monarchs". I am advised not to comment any further...
