I recently received a bulletin from Hank Lee in which is advertised "Saw" by Sean Fields. Here is part of the write-up: "Unravel a length of thread. Immediately and visually begin to SAW the thread straight into your throat! The spectators can actually see the thread deep under your flesh, from any angle!" It's 20 bucks. The reason I'm posting this is that it seems like something could be made of this for certain bizarrists out there (especially for those doing shows that capitalize on Halloween). But, it also seems that this is not new...but I can't seem to remember where I saw this kind of thing before. I would be curious about a review should anyone have this...but, also would like to know if, in fact, there is an earlier version out there somewhere.
Thanks! Nicholas |

Saw is a great trick. one my favorites of the newer magic that has been coming out.
definetly worth $20 and yes, it's excelent for bizarrist. most people can barely stand to watch it if they don't know it's coming. and for some full reviews use the search bar at the top of this page, it should come up with tons of stuff. |

Thanks, I finally found the earlier threads when I searched Sean Fields rather than SAW. Quite an interesting video clip as well.

Am I the only dissapointed person out there?? I loved this idea and couldn't wait to perform it...and while it looks cool from a distance, if you squint...the "gimmick" is completely obvious. I've tried different applications (smaller ammount, different locations...etc) nothing helps. I don't know if it's a skin tone thing, or what, but the method becomes clear. Or, better still, if the method actually became clear...lol, it might help.

I've found a lot of the final effect depends on the brand and quality of the product used.. they can be pretty variable.
I don't find SAW great as a stand alone effect but have found a perfect use for it as a finisher for the linking lifesavers/mints. After I unlink the mints, I display and eat them one at a time, and then just appear to accidentally swallow the second one without chewing, complete with a lot of gasping and hacking. This creates a good amount of misdirection (you often get people pounding you on the back) to ditch the mint and grab the set up for the SAW variation called CHOKE, and then I gaspingly tell them I can get it out myself, show them the thread and then saw in and yank out the mint. I get great, horrified reactions from this, and find the effect becomes about the mint (which they have just seen do two incredible things) rather than just the sawing effect. You can of course hand the mint to them for inspection, though not many people take you up on that offer when they think you just pulled it out of your throat. I always think its good to find a segue between two effects...

Wow...I just got Saw the other day and I love it. I had to wait to perform it until today since I needed to get the required items. Well I got them about 1 hr ago and just performed it at work and people were freaking out! While I was doing it some of the girls watching were yelling at me to stop...then as I started to pull the thread out of my neck everyone started to freak. This is an awesome visual effect. If your looking to freak people out and cause them to almost go into shock, get this trick! Right now they are still coming over and asking me about it and looking at my neck...this is a classic!

I agree. I try to carry the items needed all the time. This will make people almost faint and run. I have never had anyone ever call the method at all.
I sometimes let people give one side a little tug, they just freak out completely. I guess presentation is key here too. The pain is in your face. I always reach up to my neck after the thread has exited my neck and look back down at my hand and ask them if I am bleeding ? They just ... freak out. Cool trick, It is def worth the money. I posted this on another thread, but I'll post it here as well.
I wear a choker style cord necklace - many times thicker than ordinary thread. For those times when I am prepared but don't have any thread, I do the trick with the necklace, sawing it in and then back out. You certainly need to have the right skin type to do it with a thicker cord, but it looks pretty crazy when it works. Oh, did I mention this is a great effect? Rick |

Donkeys and waffles,
I love the idea of letting them tug on the thread! That is awesome...I am definatly doing that the next time! Thanks! I like the "am I bleeding thing also" Sometimes something gets on the thread (you know what I'm saying) and I say...look, some skin!...that really got them! Orvec, I was wondering if a thicker "thread" or string would work because the thread is actually kinda sharp for lack of a better word and I don't have to fake the pain when I do this as it hurts like heck! I am gonna try that too! Marc |

Marc,
You'll have to experiment, but I can get a pretty thick cord to work - not sure of diameter, but it is about the size of a shoelace on a dress shoe, if that makes sense. However, another magician friend of mind couldn't get one quite that thick to work. Like I said before, I think it depends on how much "play" you have with your skin on your neck. Good luck with it! Thanks GoBrowns, I have been getting some crazy reactions with the spectators giving a little tug. I use the heavy duty thread and havent hurt myself yet. I tuck my head down and clearly show the thread in each hand. I give enough slack on one side at at time and "saw" through my neck. People scream out, "don't do it!" and other things as I grimace in pain.I have enough slack that it appears that I am moving the thread quickly back and forth it my neck.
The "am I Bleeding " is for the exact reason you mentioned. Works perfectly and also serves another purpose. I rub my neck and continue for the next few minutes, which makes my neck a bit redder than usual and keep complaining that I thought I was bleeding. People just linger on and on wondering what is wrong with me. I do enjoy it a lot. Donkeys and Waffles
