I'm looking for sources of inspiration for a rope routine of my own. I'm looking for a routine done (apparently) with one 8-10 foot piece. I want to have the option of performing the routine silently, so the effects will have to be simple and visual. I'm still deciding whether or not to include a phase with a ring and rope.
I've already looked at the routines of Jeff McBride, Jeff Sheridan, and Tabary, and have some good ideas to begin playing with. Any other sources you can suggest would be greatly appreciated. James |

James,
Just for starters, I can suggest Daryl, Flip, Dennis Loomis, Richard Sanders, and Whit Haydn for ideas. As far as a ring and rope routine is concerned, there is only one "Full Circle". If you disagree with me about the ring and rope routine, it is because you have never seen Full Circle performed. It went under everybody's radar in the 90's, and is now out of production, but it is in a class by itself. Rope tricks without words is like shredded wheat without milk, fruit, or sugar (very hard to swallow). HAVE FUN Al Angello

John,
There is something unexplainable that happens when you mix a series of rope tricks with some corny jokes. It then becomes much more than the sum of its parts. I am putting such a rope and joke routine together as we speak. Perhaps, I can sell you a DVD copy, John. Al Angello

One more to add is the new Dan Tong Rope routine from the Kozmo DVD, "Finally".
It's a great rope routine! Perfect with a 10' piece of rope.

A very nice routine can be found on Paul Green's excellent DVD, In The Trenches; one of the best DVDs I've seen. You mention Kozmo, and Paul Green will be one of the featured performers on the new restaurant magic DVDs coming out soon.

Is there one where you can throw a piece of rope out on the end of the routine where it's examinable? You could try that anytime you have a prop examined, it mystifies the audience even more.

The Jeff McBride and the Jeff Sheridan routines allow you to do that.

The Dennis Loomis "Knot routine plus" is a great routine that is done with a 45" piece of rope that has no gimmicks what so ever, and practically no magicians have ever seen anything quite like it, it is a rope routine that is in a class by itself, so please keep it our little secret. Al Angello

John Zander's "Loose Ends" routine ends with the rope completely examinable at the end. KeithM |

Be sure to buy a piece of Dennis's 1/2 " drapery cord, there is all the differance in the world. I have had his DVD since September, and I'm competing in our local IBM stage competition next month. I'm doing my rope routine, but my rope routine was boring until I met Dennis. I can do the snap knot more than 75% of the time. I gave Dennis $35 for his DVD, and he gave me my signature routine. I must have had a dozen PM's conversations with him, because I started with a lot of bad habits Dennis will back his product, and help you until you get it. It is the most magic for $35 that you have ever spent. GOOD LUCK MY FRIEND Al Angello Signature routine Last year my signature routine was "the ring and rubber band plus", six months ago my signature routine was "full circle/fiber optics", today my signature routine is the "knot routine plus". Either I'm very fickle, or I'm learning a lot here at the magic Café.

Al, I will vote for learning a lot. Everything we do to enhance our skills, routines and acts only benefits us. If we are not striving to attain the "Perfect" show then we are resting on our laurels, soon to be outpaced by those that are working hard. (And we wouldn't want that.)

A funny thing just happened to me. I saw Shigeo Takagi's rope routine, and his cut, and restore is good enough to fool a magician, so cut, and restore the Japanese way is now my favorite magic trick. HAPPY HOLIDAYS Al Angello

The best (even better than Tabary) is the French magician Erdenac. His ENTIRE act is done with one piece of rops, it is not confusing and he has made a living with it for YEARS AND YEARS... try to find out a way to see his routine.
