Appreciate if someone can give a review.
Description of the Effect: Three objects, any objects are set on a table. The performer turns his back and asks a volunteer to think of one of the objects, free choice. The volunteer is asked to move the objects around to mix them up. Even though the performer does not know which one has been selected, when he turns to face the volunteer he can instantly name the selected object. This effect has been sold for hundreds of dollars by other dealers. Now you have the chance to have it for a fraction of the price. The main reason the really clever principle hasn't been used more often is, that it takes a personal lesson to learn. This is where Jay Leslie comes in. With this optimal DVD all, and we really mean all, the angles are covered. You'll be able to learn to completely stump not only your fellow performers but also paying audiences as well. The truth is that you really don't know what card the volunteer is thinking of until three seconds before you name it. You can be out of the room or be blindfolded when they select their card and mix them. Ask your friends if they know the Bob Hummer principal and they will all say it's virtually a miracle but ask them to explain it and they probably can't. Its a concept that needs explained word for word just like we've managed to film on our DVD. Without this lesson you probably won't have much luck getting someone to give you all. and we mean all, the details. With this DVD you can be amazing and astounding your friends and customers in a half an hour guaranteed. We supply three cards, printed on heavy card stock, and the DVD but you can use any three objects like: thimbles, coffee cups, balls, coins, cards, cinder blocks, umbrellas, paper balls etc; No stooges - No setup - No forces - No tricks of any kind - No peeks All you need is the ability to count to three, using your fingers, and you can flabbergast, yes flabbergast the audience. We guarantee that you will find the system Bob Hummer invented to be among the top tricks you have ever learned. You don't need any experience to learn this. You can be any age and be a master of the unknown. I found this DVD at Hocus Pocus Magic Shop. |

I would buy Martin Gardners Mathematics Magic and Mystery for $1.89 (Amazon)
WAY before shelling out for any DVD. The principle is so easy, why would you need a DVD? ------------------------------------------------ "This effect has been sold for hundreds of dollars by other dealers. Now you have the chance to have it for a fraction of the price" ------------------------------------------------- I do not believe that this effect has been sold for hundreds of dollars by ANY dealer! That's just a lie! Please name one.

The routine sounds really interesting! I suspect it uses the same Hummer idea as an older three card divination effect titled "Mind Over Monte."

If you read the promo, it say that you may be out of the room......But in reality this is not true. You have to come back into the room.
It also says...NO PEEKS...But you must see the cards or objects. Isn't that a peek? I hate these advertising rip off statements!

There are many books as Slim explained already. I believe he has his own version also, that is done over the radio...
It is really a neat principle. But the idea is to use in with good subtleties.
To believe is Magic.

Funny thing is that I was going thru Martin's book again, after many years to open it and I read the specific effect one day before I read the ad!Now that's mental...
It is a shame that they do not give the credits and they also lie in order to sell their products. However the effect is clever, basically is a simple method of counting to found which item they thought.
Don't wait for the perfect moment...Take a moment and make it perfect!!!

This effect (but done with cups instead of cards, and stuff under the cups) can be found in Water's tome as well.

I'm sure this principle is available online somewhere - it seems like something that would be.

This could be the same principle as Al Koran's note under cup.
I'll bet it is. Richard Lyn |

Back in the March 1990 issue of Genii, Max Abrams gave some nice touches on the Hummer principle in his "Hummeracle" article.
Then, in the June 1990 issue, Stephen Tucker and Gordon Jeppesen wrote up their further touches, inspired by the Abrams article. You can find these articles in the Genii archive. Also, check out "Count On Your Fingers" in Harry Lorayne's "Mathematical Wizardry". He has an ingenious variation in which you don't have to turn around and look at the objects! As a matter of fact (Slim King will like this), you can even do this version on the phone! |

The ad also says" "The main reason the really clever principle hasn't been used more often is, that it takes a personal lesson to learn"
You'll also find the needed "personal instruction" explained in detail by Jeff Sheridan on one of the L & L DVDs he did for them. He does this exact Hummer trick. |

Well folks. Here goes my first review:
Review Of "Musical Chairs" 24 minutes. Most of us are familiar with the basic principle at work in Musical Chairs. The effect is that three objects are presented and one secretly chosen by a spectator. The objects are then switched around and yet the performer can still identify the selected object. Effects using this principle are seldom spoken about as being fantastic effects for one reason: They often fall into a category of effects diminished by an audience thinking: "Something was happening but I don't know what." I was hoping that Mr. Leslie had overcome some of these concerns. A few tangential gripes. It is relatively easy to shoot and burn a homemade DVD these days. If someone wants to concentrate on the material, a DVD may not look slick, may not come in a three-color DVD case but it could be well worth the asking price because of the strength and usefulness of the material presented. One the other hand, if a DVD comes in a nice case, you expect it to be polished and professional looking. The back cover of Musical Chairs reads "This is magicians dream effect It fryes the minds of spectators..." "This is a magician's dream effect. It fries the minds..." would have resulted from some proofreading and there were several other spelling and gramatical errors just on the case. Secondly, I expect when I see a video of a trick or routine, that the effect be performed in front of an audience. If the effect is a "reputation maker" that fries, let me see ya fry someone with it. But there is no demonstration of either Musical Chairs or The Trick With No Name on this DVD at all. Instead, a camera is focused close-up on a few props sitting on a table and the perspective never changes. Mr. Leslie just goes into the explanation of the principle. Thirdly, I don't even know what Mr. Leslie looks like. All that is shown is his left hand in the lower left corner of the screen, as if narrated by a character from the Adam's Family TV Show. Fourthly, and I always have mixed thoughts about it, he did not mention or credit the magic minded people who have played around with the basic principle previous. I tend to think we go overboard a bit in this regard ("Magician X due to great negligence and a complete disregard for history, neglected to mention that Troy Fabblguard published a clever variation of this in Volume 4, Issue 7 in 1895..." etc.). But other people did, in my opinion, need to be mentioned in Musical Chairs and, besides, I like to learn a little history and background of any effect. Mr. Leslie merely quotes James Swoger as saying something like: The principle has been around since the time of Copernicus. Since it is an ancient principle and nothing of the effect's background or variations or predecessors in the magic world is discussed at all, it is impossible to tell Leslie's thinking from what came before. This can be quite an advantage for people who use this DVD as a springboard for future published variations and/or improvements. First, they do not truly know Leslie's improvements, and second, they could feel as compelled to credit previous work on the idea as Leslie did. All that said, I see some very good possibilities in principle explained in the Musical Chairs DVD. I know the Hummer principle from one of Bruce Bernstein's books, and it seems an elaboration on that. The explanation of the principle is quite thorough and comprehensive. In my opinion, however, it is a rank puzzle with three different objects, and a much more effective mystery with three apparently identical items and something hidden in or under one of them, such as a crumpled dollar bill under one of three styrofoam cups. The three cups would be laid out mouth down by the spec in any order, the wonder worker turns his back, the dollar is hidden under any of the three cups, the cups are switched around with the spectator calling nearly all the shots and then the wonder worker turns around at last and finds cup with the dollar. Within two viewings, I came up with a couple of subtle improvements to the presentation, which only made me wonder why more thought did not go into it in the first place. This and the above criticisms lead me to believe that this was a bit of a hurried production. I like the trick, but felt that for the price asked, I should have seen the person, and seen a performance of the effect. Nevertheless, it is something that I will use, so I can't kick too much. Respectfully submitted, |

Café members like myself all shared a great deal about this effect freely here
http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......forum=82 I have a new improved version that I use in my live show and also on the Radio. It involves not knowing where any of the items are to begin with and only a small sublety towards the end.

As we all know, the strategies of Magic are to be found in the garb of simplicity & dressed into the royal suit of complexity. Jay Leslie, after all is said & done, & having used his services as a card-trimmer (who does a nice job) has never come accross as anybody other than those certain 'magicicans' who are busy at making a living & with age and with case & props chugging along from one town to the next, are mentally bent into of a kind of repetitive boredom. Some, having little funds, are cornered by their own set of difficult circumstances & apt to make mistakes and give up their part of responsibility to the learning curve dedicated to those younger wizards who follow, and also to those of us who greatly appreciate giving credit where credit is due & thusly historical perspective sharpens our love of magic. All in all, Musical Chairs is a reputation maker . . . in the right hands!
We play the Game - but Fate deals the Cards
