Who else read Lee Earle's post? I'm curious as to your thoughts as I agree with some of it while thinking that other parts are a bit too "reductio ad absurdum" if you know what I mean.

Buy anything by Greg Arce, especially "Lost in Thought"!
The first routine in the book (as well as the essay) alone is worth the price.

I thought reading Bob Cassidy's 39 steps was interesting. He gave a lot of background on all of the books he mentioned. For example,
Quote:
"A common misconception among new mentalists is that Theodore Annemann was the author of Practical Mental Effects. He never saw the book. It was published in 1944, two years after Annemann’s untimely death. Practical Mental Effects (recently re-released by Dover Publishing under the title Annemann’s Mental Magic) is a compilation of what John J. Crimmins, Jr. thought were the best mental effects and routines that had appeared over the years in Annemann’s magazine, the Jinx. Many excellent mental effects were left out and others were edited in such a way that the flavor of the original routine was lost or obscured. The best mental effects with playing cards were compiled in two books of card tricks culled from the magazine and later published by Max Holden. They, too, are presently being published by Dover. He also lists Anderson, George – It Must Be Mind Reading, You, Too, Can Read Minds,Dynamite Mentalism Andrews, Val – Simplicity, Audacity and Bluff Annemann, Theodore – Annemann’s Practical Mental Effects, Annemann’s Mental Bargain Effects, Annemann’s One Man Mental and Psychic Routine, The Jinx- complete file, En Rapport, 202 Methods of Forcing Baker, Al – Al Baker’s Mental Magic Becker, Larry- World of Super Mentalism, World of Super Mentalism Part Two, Stunners Bernstein, Bruce – PsiKicks Corinda, Tony- 13 Steps to Mentalism Dewey, Herb and Seville, Tom – Red Hot Cold Reading Goldstein, Phil - The Color Series of Mentalism (now Prism) Hilliard, John Northern - Greater Magic Hoy, David- The Bold and Subtle Miracles of Dr Faust Hay, Henry – The Amateur Magician’s Handbook (he claims too many people overlook the importance of this book for the fundementals of magic, presentation) Hugard, Jean - The Encyclopedia of Card Tricks Jones, Bascom – The Compleat Magick Knepper, Kenton – Wonder Words, Completely Cold, Miracles of Suggestion Koran, Al – Professional Presentations Kross, Ford – Out of the Deep Freeze Larson, William, Sr. – The Mental Magic of William Larson Sr. (Currently OOP) Lesley, Ted – Paramiracles Lorayne, Harry - How to Develop a Super Power Memory (everything you need to know about mnemonics) Rowland, Ian – The Full Facts of Cold Reading Sharpe, Sam- Conjuring Psychological Principles Shiels, Tony “Doc” – The Shiels’ Effect Tarbell, Harlan – The Tarbell Course in Magic Volumes Four, Five, and Six Thompson, J.G. – My Best Waters, T.A. - Man, Myth, and Magick Very good list, much of which I have or am attempting to acquire myself. It would be worthwhile IMO, to sign up for membership on his site and read the whole article to read his annotations of each book and why it is included in his list. I know most will disagree with me but I have changed my mind about this. I know reading is required heavily for mentalism but as far as effects, I do not think there is a must have. Not even the precious CT.
Consider Derren Brown. Notice he can walk on stage any give night (or stroll for that matter) and do just about anything and floor spectators. Whether they react with applause or sheer silence, his mere prescence and brilliant "belief acting" is enough to pull off just about anything. Candini's opinion....

Anyone think this kind of topic should be a sticky?
- For debate: whether mentalists should list their texts until the person is ready to learn and will ask when they are ready, is another matter? Dave

Another good book is "It Works for Me!" - Bill Palmer.
A good e-book is "Sigma" - Paolo Cavalli. |

If you are serious about learning Mentalism, I'd suggest that before you read any of the above material or buy the DVD's you read Derren Brown's ABSOLUTE MAGIC. It will point you in the right direction, and will stand you in good stead when wading through the rest of the material suggested.
Brown's book is full of tremendous advice and philosophy on Mentalism from arguably the most successful performer of modern Mentalism. - entity

I personally would recommend before you even pick up a book containing all the "sneaky sneaky stuff" go and read a few books/articles on people.
Perhaps just pick up two 1) People Watching - desmond morris 2) any Pop. sociology book. Then after reading and digesting go people watching. see if you can "Work them out" and work out what makes them tick. Another useful piece of advice would be to sit in a group of friends and consider what they are talking about, why they are talking about it etc etc. In effect master social dynamics to a T. (I believe B.D. advocates in his book absolute magic that the first key to powerful magic is to get the group to play along on your terms. which in effect in terms of pyschology is how t enter a group and become the alpha male/female. However it must be done in such a way that your presence does not seem threatening to the other members of the group who are competing for the "social power" over the group. I perfect example of a performer making the group adapt to him which isn't threatening to the rest of the group is of course Mr. Osterlind. So after people watching then go and buy Richard Osterlinds Easy to Master Mental Miracles. Buy one, watch it over and over and over and over and over again. Then buy 13 steps to mentalism and then which ever book takes your fancy - some will recommend annemann others will recommend obscure titles written thousands of years ago that only a select few have access to. Then having digested a few books on people, a book on mentalism and a DVD then begin to put together your mini show. (I think One mentalist Im not sure who - although I think it is Ian Rowland advocates taking 10 mins from 13 steps and mastering it then performing it.) Whilst I agree with the 10 minutes, 3 routines first phase to mastery I think the 3 tricks should be your own. Now I'm not talking about having to creativley think up an amazing effect having only been in the art for a lil while but instead think about your ten minute routine in terms of how you want it to look, feel and come accross. Instead of taking the tricks you have access to only think in terms of method. But never think of the method first. Instead sit down, (prefferably in a nice big comfy chair or under a small tree at night staring at the stars) then think, "If I could do XYZ that would be awesome." Substitute XYZ for your three effects. so as an example it could start with 1) I want to begin by putting thoughts into peoples heads about given topics 2) Then I want them to be able to read my mind 3) Then to finish I want all of them to hallucinate. Of course the above 3 are so broad but you could then go about putting together your own show based on how you want it to feel. You can then go back through your books/memory and just begin to put the methods in place. So an example would be for number 1) you could use A NW, or a PS force, or jedi mind tricks. for number two you could again use a NW, Card F***E or whatever. So to sum up. 1) Learn about people 2) Watch some MR. Osterlind. 3) Read the classic book. 4) Start to think "outside the box" - (just think in abstract terms basically) 5) Put it all thogether. 6) Script it all - then sit in a room talking to yourself like a madman as you rehearse. 7) Find a group of people and do it. 8) Then after all of this buy the 3 key books on presentation. D.B. Pure effect and Absolute Magic and then top it all of with Ken Webers Maximum entertaiment. 9) Think about everything to do with your show, your 3 tricks etc etc 10) do it all over again. |
