I have seen several variations of this illusion, where the woman is put in this contraption (usually a box of some sort) and is then compressed and then stretched back out to her original size.
I am wondering where/if I can find plans for this type of illusion. I don't remember seeing anything about plans for this illusion, but I know this illusion has been discussed. I remember reading posts on this subject and I have done a search here on the Café but came up empty. Maybe someone could give me some ideas of keywords to help me search with. Also, if anyone can think of other illusions along this line (comical, unbelievable) that are not too costly I would be interested in suggestions. Thanks,
Thanks,

You have found no plans because Dan Summers owns the rights to it. All others are knock offs.

Thanks! That's what I needed to know but not what I wanted to hear.
Do you know the correct name for this illusion is? where I can find this illusion? I will search for "Dan summers". Or do any other illusions similar to this illusion come to mind?
Thanks,

Compressed is way better. Compressed is more deceptive then shrink boy

Question on "compressed" there are actually several different types if I understand so.
One is the Summers version Vertical One is the Andre Kole version Horizontal Then you have variations from before they came out such as the Doug Henning compressed done in one of his specials? Then you do the various flatten/squash illusions like the Wringer, correct? So, when was the first compress type illusion made/performed? |

There is a horizontal style one in Illusion Works 2. He calls it The Squelcher. In the same book is Canine Crusher. You can probably guess the plot to that one.

Most modern horizontal models owe something to Andre' Kole's version. He licenses it only rarely. My guess is the first compression style illusion probably happened sometime around the age of Merlin!

OK don't take this the wrong way...but if someone was to actually sit down and build shrink boy and mod it so that the sides were thinner wouldn't we have a knock off of compressed?

Does anyone have shrink boy? I don't understand how you can put out semi-plans? Is the part that's missing the part which Andrew Mayne would have to credit? I don't know much (actually zero) about Andrew Mayne but a lot of his stuff seems to not credit were credit is due.
Personally I would do the right thing and contact Daniel Sommers if you are going to try and build this. Does Andrew Mayne have Sommers permission? Diane |

When I published Shrink Boy in Solo-X; Rand Woodbury, myself and another well-known illusion designer all thought it to be original. I was contacted by someone after publication telling me that someone else had something similar in *development*. But this was after Solo-X had been published. I wouldn't have published it if I hadn't thought it was original to me. Because the prop is designed around the specific dimensions of the person in it, exact plans would be misleading. Calling it a knock-off is simply incorrect and just plain mean. As an aside I should mention that I've never been provided with any proof that Shrink Boy wasn't the first one out the gate. I'm willing to be convinced otherwise, but its been ten years already. |

At the time Solo-X came out we were actively working as full-time builders with an eye out for new items & ideas. I spoke with Andrew at Rand Woodbury's suggestion because he had some exciting concepts coming out. When Solo-X was issued there had been no hints or rumors of anyone else releasing a one man vertical compression illusion.
Andrew is absolutely right about the dimension issue. Many people make a serious mistake by buying a book and putting the saw to wood based on what they see there. Not only are there frequently mistakes but (NEWS FLASH) not all assistants or magicians are exactly the same size!

Very good!!! Thank you Andrew for clearing that point up. And as I re-read my post I see that I used the wrong words.....what should have been said is that if shrink boy was mod wouldnt it look like compressed. Never the less if Andrew and Rand and other worked on it and at the time of release ther was nothing else like it out then I really believe that there should be no problems with it. And shrink boy should not ever be classified as a Knock-off

I absolutely believe you when you state you would not have published Shrink Boy if you have thought the idea was not original. Your ethics have never been in question as far as I am concerned. May I say that I am also quite impressed with your open mind on the subject of which was first out of the Gate. The entire issue has sort of been buried for the last 10 years so I can understand why no proof has come your way regards the origins of the concept. Not many people involved want to relive the debate again. I can tell you however that Dan Summers COMPRESSED debuted on stage at Magic Island in Houston Texas in 1994. If the entertainment director from 94 is still there he could verify that. Walter Blaney who is a good friend of Dan Summers was witness to it being created. ( also in 94 ) Others in the magic world were also aware of it before ShrinkBoy came out but I don't have their permission to bring them back into this debate so for now I will leave their names out of it. As I mentioned before your ethics are not in question here so my intention is not to accuse you of any sort of theft. If you'd care to PM me however I will offer you a bit more of the story which may answer a few questions for you. Best, Tim |

I don’t think anyone thinks Andrew ripped off compressed ( even Dan Summers has said he thought that it was of independent thought).Dan Summers' Compressed Illusion was not the first vertical compression Illusion ( Doug Henning and others did it first with a different method ) Shrinkboy uses yet another different method than Compressed. People said the look is to close to the Compressed illusion but those in the know of how Shrinkboy works (the method) know it has to look that way. since Dan Summers did not come up with the idea of vertical shrinking and the method of ShrinkBoy is VERY different how can it be a rip off??? it can't.

If you want to purchase a "Compressed" you may contact Bill Smith...an authorized builder. If one is a performing professional, he knows what the correct course of action is. I respect others opinions on the matter...but I feel that "Compressed" visually speaks for itself.
