Solid cups are only feasible in certain materials. Copper, brass and stainless steel are too heavy for use in solid cups of normal size. They do work well in aluminum and wood.

However, if you are planning to do Shawn Farquhar's routine, please don't try to deconstruct it. Most of us are too familiar with it.

Bill is dead on about the weight of metal. In the 70s I did a TV commercial using beer cans and the final move was not a solid cup but a full can of beer. That was heavy enough!

Try Pringle cans! (You will have to have them tapered. Creme cheese or yogurt containers might work.)

FYI - In the 1970's I made several dozen solid brass cups and sold most of them through Sun Magic in Phoenix. The cup was shaped similar to my Riser Jumbo Cups and Stage and Street Cups - sized in between the two. It was extremely heavy. To use it without creating suspicion, the "move" was to tilt the cup (pivot it) rather than lift it during the short routine. The ball to be vanished was merely rolled into the palm of the hand pivoting the cup. The only time the heavy cup was lifted was to knock out the final load. This was usually fruit or a baseball. The cup was then placed on the table so that a female spectator would have to attempt to lift it at arm's length. Believe me that was not going to happen. If she would place the produced fruit under the cup, I'd vanish it. Actually, I'd lap the fruit as she fought to drag the heavy cup near her to attempt to lift it.

Solid "cups" were around even before I made/sold my version. There were even two small aluminum versions made during the same time period. I think Bill Palmer has one style of the small solid cups made in aluminum.

I do, indeed. I also have one of Auke's micro cups in stainless that is solid. It's tiny, but quite heavy.

Dennis Loomis and I met for lunch and he brought his micro solid in stainless.
I was absolutely amazed at the weight.

I knew right away that I would not be getting a solid "regular" cup anytime soon. Unless I could talk bill palmer into driving behind me with it on a forklift as I strolled table-to-table. What with gas prices as they are, I'd rather not spend the money on fuel just for the solid cup kicker.

Plus something makes me think they'd see it coming.

Make your own. It is easy. Just take a regular cup and fill it with cement. Or lead.

Yes, I asked Auke to make the solid cup for me that Frank saw. Auke said nothing about weight, and I had assumed that it wouldn't really be solid. A solid piece over the mouth but actually hollow. Nope, it was a solid chunk of Stainless steel turned into the cup shape. When I took the package out of my mail box I started to laugh until it occured to me that my mailman might have suffered a hernia. And, this was a fairly small cup. In a standard size cup, it could be used as the business end of a ball and chain.
