Okay, okay, okay, ill say a few words.
There is a lot of material on these dvds, so I really think there is something for everyone. Some effects require passes and faro shuffles, and others are easier to do. Almost all of the require some sleight of hand, but nothing too hard. There are ALOT of ideas, and variations on classics. Unlike most other L&L dvds, these dvds have ALOT more on them, and whether ur looking for inspiration or material, these are good. Many of the classic plots are covered: jazz aces, open predition, ambitous card, card to impossible location(in between a 2ply toilet paper sheets), rising card, triumph, card tranpositions, sandwhich routines, and a normal card variation on the princess cards. He has a variation on the cardtoon deck which is a very nice routine. Unlike the Dan Harlan version, you do need some sleight of hand for this. The deck is gaffed in a very different way, and although the concept and idea is the same, the appearance looks very different. I have seen Joe Rindfleisch perform most of the routines in person, and he does them very well. Being that many of the routines appeared in his lecture notes, and that these dvds were filmed over 3 years ago, the material is not brand new. I should mention that the presentations are alittle dry and slow moving, and there are several points of hesitation and dead time between each effect. The main reason for this is that within just a few days he has to perform over 30 card effets and explain them. that's ALOT of sleight of hand, and ALOT to remember. Otherwise I would recommend these dvds just because there is so much to learn from. The production value is excellent just like most of the L&L products are, and yes most of the spectators have appeared on many other dvds, but I don't think that adds or takes away from the magic. I do think that if you watch the dvds in its entirety and pick out a few effects that you liked, you will be satisfied. I should mention that very few effects are self-working, which by the way, is a term I hate. I should mention that he mention's "Reuben's Caféteria," many times throughout the dvd, and if you're not familiar with NY magic, you won't know what that is. Briefly, for a very long time until about 3 years ago, Rueben's was a diner restaurant in midtown manhatten where lots of magician's used to share magic, like an informal magic club. It was people like Gene Maze, Ken Krenzel, Sol Stone, Doug Edwards, Gerry Duetch, and so many others who used to go there every Saturday, and Joe Rindfleisch mentions that he was influnced by many of the people who were there. As I said before, he does a card to impossible location. He the card lost in the deck, then picks up a grocery bag takes out some stuff from it(chips, bread, water) and finally takes out the wrapped toilet paper roll. Joe then tears the paper off, and give it to a spectator to hold, spends a few minutes unravelling the roll, and the card is found in between the sheets and then falls out. There are also several 4 ace productions, and gambling routines. Its very important to mention again, there although he briefly explains most of the sleights he uses, there are many sleights, most standard, that you must have mastered in order to do most of the effects(DLs, passes, counts, faros, slop shuffle, and card controls). He also has some very clever card revalations including 2 card rises, 2(or)3 triumphs, 1 that goes with an old song(enie, menie, meni, moe), and a card case revelation that finally makes use of a particular printed card box that I have personally never seen used which is very clever. I feel like I have covered almost all of it, although being somewhat general. I don't think its fair to criticize any particular routines, since I think the dvds are more about taking several dozen very nice ideas and classic plots, and putting them to a routine, and adding something to it, which I feel Joe has done very well for the most part. Obviously I thought certain routines where weaker or stronger than others, but that simply my taste. I should mention that the format of the dvd is very nice. Although it makes more many more menus, but the dvds are seperated into 7 acts, 3 on the first dvd, and 4 on the second. I didn't think that the routines necessarily went well together but it did make for slightly better learning. Lastly, before I forget he also does an interesting pen through card box effect, that's pretty cool. I think that covers most of it. If I think of anything else to mention, then I will do so. If you have any questions, let me know. hope that helps later |

Agreed, tons of material. One complaint about the shooting was one of the cameras was almost level with the cards, which did not always allow you to see which cards were showing. Unfortunately, this angle clearly showed a lot of packet switches and moves that brought cards into contact with the deck (not my personal style and there seemed a lot of this).
I liked Joe's unique pieces or collaborations rather than the derivative classics (personal preference). His card handling is certainly advanced, but there's a good variety of easier to handle effects as well. The card in toilet paper roll, 10 Mate (virtually self-working), and penciltration effect mentioned above were my favourites and would qualify as magician foolers as well. Janel was in top-form, of course, but I think there may be a NEW Janel, who was sitting opposite her for some of the routines, can't remember her name. |

Yes, I think those routines where some of the more bizzare plots touched on. Not to give anything away, but the penciltration effect has a similar attitude as the Screwed Deck, but Joe's handling makes it much easier to do.
Yes, there were several bad camera angles, but I don't think it took much away from the effects. This has happened in several other of the L&L dvds. Yes, the NEW Janel was something that was nice too look at while Joe was searching for cards for the next trick. |
