Has anyone undated and used any effects from Annemann's Practical Mental Magic? If so what? Thanks

Yes most of us I would say would be a fair guess.

Barney, not to discourage you, but the list of the effects from PMM (and from other Annemann's books and magazines as well) that top Mentalists as well as amateurs have used in their performances would be very, very, very long!
Then you'll rise right before my eyes, on wings that fill the sky, like a phoenix rising!

To add to Paolo's comment, it is the equivelent of handing someone a dictionary and asking what words within they have used.
PMM is a collection of material from the top thinkers of that time. Many of the plots are timeless, and much of what is done today is owed to them. Tony |

What I find most interesting is that many of the effects were adaptations of earlier work.
And in the same way we do as they did by reaching into the past and building structures from the interesting bones and bits excavated from the river of time. J ack

Mark Strivings, Richard Osterlind, and a few others have produced books/DVDs taking Annemann effects and "updating" them for todays audiences. To get an excellent idea of what I'm referring to, get ahold of the four DVD set "Easy to Master Mental Miracles" by Richard Osterlind; but don't let the title of the set fool you into thinking that it's a case of see the DVD copy what is done, and then do a great show...it's a treasure trove of information and is by far one of the best sets I've owned. |

Is there a difference between Practical Mental Magic and Practical Mental Effects?

PMM is the unabridged Dover version of the earlier work titled Annemann's PME.

Try looking at PME (or PMM) as a book of techniques rather than routines. Take a bit of this plus a little of that and come up with your own effects.

Coming back to the original question I especially like and have used the following of Annemann's tricks from PMM:
- A Day in Your Life - The Germain Gem - Graphology - The Perfect Book Test - Symmyst - "40,000 words" and "Another Dictionary Effect" - Taps! - Pseudo-Psychometry - Just an Echo - With Sight Unseen - The Brain Wave Deck - Moonlight Madness With the exception of "With Sight Unseen" I consider all of these routines "timeless". Did not feel much need to undate them but to adjust them to my style. My 2 cents. Best, G. |
